Logroño
Logroño () is the capital of the province of La Rioja, situated in northern Spain. Traversed in its northern part by the Ebro River, Logroño has historically been a place of passage, such as the Camino de Santiago. Its borders were disputed between the Iberian kingdoms of Castille, Navarre and Aragon during the Middle Ages. The population of the city in 2021 was 150,808 while the metropolitan area included nearly 200,000 inhabitants. The city is a centre of trade of Rioja wine, for which the area is noted, and manufacturing of wood, metal and textile products. Etymology Origin of the name The origin of this toponym is, as for many other places, unknown. The name ''Lucronio'' was first used in a document from 965 where García Sánchez I of Pamplona donated the so-called place to the Monastery of San Millán. Club Deportivo Logroñés, S.A.D. was a Spanish football team based in Logroño, in the autonomous community of La Rioja. Founded in 1940, it last played in ''Regional Preferente de La Rioja''. Due to financial problems, since 2009 the club has not played in any competition. The club, who appeared in nine La Liga seasons, was replaced by UD Logroñés and SD Logroñés. History After '' Club Deportivo Logroño'', the new ''Club Deportivo Logroñés'' saw the light of day after the Civil War, on 30 May 1940. Until 1950, it played in ''Tercera División'', after which it achieved a second level promotion. Unión Deportiva Logroñés, S.A.D. is a Spanish football team based in Logroño, in the autonomous community of La Rioja. Founded in 2009, it currently plays in Primera División RFEF – Group 2, holding home matches at ''Estadio Las Gaunas'', with a capacity of 16,000 seats. History ''Unión Deportiva Logroñés'' was founded in 2009 after the extinction of CD Logroñés, occupying the seat of CD Varea, recently promoted to Segunda División B. They comfortably maintained their place in the division in their first season, (2009–10), and their reserve team, UD Logroñés B, finished in third position in the regional championship, thus promoting to Tercera División.
