Lockheed Fire
The Lockheed Fire was a wildfire in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the Swanton and Bonny Doon areas of Santa Cruz County, California. The fire was started on August 12, 2009 at 7:16 PM PDT. A Red Cross shelter was established at Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz for families who were evacuated from the area. An animal evacuation center was also established at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds is located in Watsonville, California. It is home to the Santa Cruz County Fair. The venue also hosts other events throughout the year, including concerts and trade shows. Notable past performers include Whitesnake, .... Many resources were demanded for this fire. The steep terrain and lack of road access in the area made it difficult to fight the blaze. Bonny Doon Ecological Reserve
The Bonny Doon Ecological Reserve is a nature preserve of in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, United States. The reserve protects several rare and endangered plant and animal species within an area known as the Santa Cruz Sandhills, an ancient seabed containing fossilized marine animals. The land was purchased in 1989 by The Nature Conservancy which deeded the property to the state, and is now managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. It is adjacent to the Laguna parcel of the San Vicente Redwoods protected area. The Santa Cruz Mountains are the only known location of the Zayante soil derived from the Santa Margarita geologic formation, that occur in three clusters in Santa Cruz County. Bonny Doon is a census-designated place in Santa Cruz County, California. It is situated northwest of the Santa Cruz, California, city of Santa Cruz, considered part of the South Bay (San Francisco Bay Area), southern San Francisco Bay Area or northern Monterey Bay Area. Bonny Doon's population was 2,868, as reported by the 2020 United States Census. It was founded in the 1850s as a logging camp. 2009 California Wildfires
The 2009 California wildfires were a series of 9,159 wildfires that were active in the US state of California, during the year 2009. The fires burned more than of land from early February through late November, due to Red Flag conditions, destroying hundreds of structures, injuring 134 people, and killing four. The wildfires also caused at least US$134.48 million in damage. Although the fires burned many different regions of California in August, the month was especially notable for several very large fires which burned in Southern California, despite being outside of the normal fire season for that region.
