Locker High School
W.P. Locker School was a public secondary school in Wiggins, Mississippi, United States. It was the only high school in Stone County for black students until the public schools were integrated in 1969. The buildings are now Stone Middle School. History Stone county did not provide any educational opportunities for black students past grade 8 until 1955, when Stone County Training School was built. The first high school for black students in Stone County was renamed W.P. Locker High School in 1959 in honor of W.P. Locker, who was born a slave in 1854 in North Carolina, and later became an educator. Although it was called a high school, Locker contained grades K–12. Wiggins, Mississippi
Wiggins is a city in and the county seat of Stone County, Mississippi, United States. It is part of the Gulfport– Biloxi, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,272 at the 2020 census. History Wiggins is named after Wiggins Hatten, the father of Madison Hatten, one of the area's original homesteaders. It was incorporated in 1904, and the 1910 census reported 980 residents. In the early 1900s, Wiggins prospered along with the booming timber industry. Wiggins was once headquarters of the Finkbine Lumber Company. On January 21, 1910, between the hours of 11 am and 1 pm, more than half of the Wiggins business district was destroyed by fire. The fire started from unknown origin in the Hammock Building, a lodging house, and spread rapidly because of strong winds from the northwest. Stone High School (Mississippi)
Stone High School is a public high school located in Wiggins, Mississippi, United States. It is the only high school in the Stone County School District. History Prior to federally mandated integration in 1969, Stone County maintained separate schools for white students and black students. Stone High School served the white students, while Stone County Training School, built in 1955 and renamed W.P. Locker High School in 1959, served the African-American students. After integration, Locker became Stone Middle School. Locker's principal, Needham Jones, a former Tuskegee airman, was demoted to assistant principal at Stone Middle, although he was more qualified than the white principal at Stone High. Jones sued and won, but retired rather than take the position of principal at Stone High. In 2016, a group of white students at Stone High put a noose around a black student's neck. Tuskegee Airmen
The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of primarily African American military pilots (fighter and bomber) and airmen who fought in World War II. They formed the 332d Fighter Group and the 477th Fighter Group, 477th Bombardment Group (Medium) of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). The name also applies to the navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks, and other support personnel. The Tuskegee airmen received praise for their excellent combat record earned while protecting American bombers from enemy fighters. The group was awarded three Distinguished Unit Citations. All black military pilots who trained in the United States trained at Griel Field, Kennedy Field, Moton Field, Shorter Field, and the Tuskegee Army Air Fields.
