Lock Crowther
Lock Crowther (9 September 1940–1993; first name by birth Lachlan) was an Australian multihull sailboat designer. He grew up in Bairnsdale in the East Gippsland region of Victoria. Though his first name was Lachlan by birth, he insisted on being called Lock or Lockie. Career Lock and his family built his first boat, a trimaran called ''Bunyip'', in 1959 while he was still a teenager. In 1960 he raced in the Easter regatta at Paynesville, Victoria, Australia, and won against a field of 300 boats. This initial success inspired others to build similar boats. Crowther then studied electrical engineering in Melbourne and in the early 1960s became involved in multihull design and the '' Amateur Yacht Research Society''. In 1962 ''Trio'' was built based upon his designs. Crowther's next design was the Kraken 25, garnering some recognition. Later, Lockie decided to give up his day job in Melbourne and move to Sydney to design multihulls full-time. In 1969, a Kraken 40 won the N ...

Brighton, Victoria
Brighton is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 11 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Bayside local government area. Brighton recorded a population of 23,252 at the 2021 census. Brighton is named after Brighton in England. History In England, on 29 August 1840, Henry Dendy (1800–81) purchased of Port Phillip land at £1 per acre, sight unseen, under the terms of the short-lived Special Survey regulations. Dendy arrived on 5 February 1841 to claim his land. The area was known as Dendy's Special Survey. The area Dendy was compelled to take, called "Waterville", was bound by the coastline to the west and the present day North Road, East Boundary Road and South Road. A town was surveyed in mid-1841, defined by the crescent-shaped street layout which remains today, and subdivided allotments were offered for sale. The area soon became the "Brighton Estate", and Dendy's site for his own home was named "Brighton ...

Sydney To Hobart
The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is an annual event hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, starting in Sydney, New South Wales, on Boxing Day and finishing in Hobart, Tasmania. The race distance is approximately . The race is run in conjunction with the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, and is widely considered to be one of the most difficult yacht races in the world. The race was initially planned to be a cruise by Peter Luke and some friends who had formed a club for those who enjoyed cruising as opposed to racing, however when a visiting British Royal Navy Officer, Captain John Illingworth, suggested it be made a race, the event was born. The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race has grown over the decades, since the inaugural race in 1945, to become one of the top three offshore yacht races in the world, and it now attracts maxi yachts from all around the globe. The 2019 race was the 75th edition. Australia's foremost offshore sailing prize is The George Adams Tattersall ...

Multihull Designers
A multihull is a boat or ship with more than one hull, whereas a vessel with a single hull is a monohull. The most common multihulls are catamarans (with two hulls), and trimarans (with three hulls). There are other types, with four or more hulls, but such examples are very rare and tend to be specialised for particular functions. Sailing multihulls Counter-intuitively, it is unhelpful to think of the design progression to be "1-2-3", namely monohull - catamaran - trimaran; rather, it is "1-3-2". A sailing trimaran is, in effect, a modified monohull with lightweight outrigger hulls (or "amas") for stability instead of a heavy deep keel; so it follows that a sailing trimaran will be lighter and faster than a sailing monohull. A sailing trimaran will have a centre hull that may comprise up to 90% of total hull volume, and 95% of total deadweight. A sailing trimaran at rest will have both amas out of the water and, when heeled, will only ever have one of the amas immersed. ...

Kraken 18
Kraken 18 was a day racing trimaran sailboat designed by Lock Crowther in the wake of his successful Bunyip 20 design,''Scanned specification brochure for Kraken 18 / Kraken 25 / Bunyip 20.'' as a scaled-down version of the earlier Kraken 25 with similar performance. Its smaller size and folding beams made it more practical and led to its greater success. Advertised as "a slightly faster, more attractive version of the Bunyip 20 with round bilge hulls", it shared an identical rig with the Bunyip 20 but was shorter. It was accepted as a class by the Victoria branch of Trimaran Association of Australia, making it the first one design trimaran class in Australian history.
