Lo Ming-yau
Lo Ming-yau (1900–1967) or Luo Mingyou was a Hong Kong entrepreneur and filmmaker, and a pioneer of Chinese cinema. His uncle Lo Wen-kan (羅文榦, Luo Wengan) was a major politician during the early Republican period. Lo Ming-yau founded the Hwa Peh Film Company (華北電影公司) in Beijing in 1927. In 1930, Hwa Peh Film Company merged with Lai Man-Wai's China Sun Motion Picture Company and a few other companies in Shanghai to become United Photoplay Service, one of the biggest film studios in China. British Hong Kong
Hong Kong was a colony and later a dependent territory of the British Empire from 1841 to 1997, apart from a period of occupation under the Japanese Empire from 1941 to 1945 during the Pacific War. The colonial period began with the British occupation of Hong Kong Island in 1841, during the First Opium War between the British and the Qing dynasty. The Qing had wanted to enforce its prohibition of opium importation within the dynasty that was being exported mostly from British India, as it was causing widespread addiction among its populace. ''Playthings'' (), also known as ''Little Toys'', is a 1933 silent film directed by filmmaker Sun Yu. It is one of two films Sun Yu directed in 1933 (the other being '' Daybreak''). The film stars popular Chinese actress Ruan Lingyu, and was produced by the leftist film production company, Lianhua Film Company. The story follows a village toy-maker, Sister Ye, who urges a group of villagers to continue making traditional playthings despite immense competition from foreign toy factories. Synonymous to many other films made during the same time period, ''Playthings'' is a patriotic propaganda film that expresses skepticism towards China's rapid urbanization and industrialization. The Hong Kong Film Archive is a film archive collects, preserves, and screens Hong Kong films and other related materials. The archive was founded in 1993, when its Planning Office was opened by the Urban Council. It joined the International Federation of Film Archives in 1996. The archive has been under the management of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department since 2000. The film archive building in Sai Wan Ho regularly hosts exhibitions, screenings and seminars showcasing Hong Kong film. The archive edits the book series ''Hong Kong Filmography'' and ''Monographs of Hong Kong Film Veterans''. It also distributes a quarterly ''Newsletter'' that reports on the latest developments of the Archive and includes features on certain aspects of film culture. ''The Peach Girl'', also known as ''Peach Blossom Weeps Tears of Blood'', is a 1931 silent film written and directed by Bu Wancang. It is a loose adaptation of William Shakespeare's ''The Two Gentlemen of Verona''. The film is one of several collaborations between Bu Wancang and two of the top Chinese movie stars of the day Ruan Lingyu and the Korean-born Jin Yan and was produced by the Lianhua Film Company.
