Llysfaen Railway Station
Llysfaen railway station was located in Colwyn, Denbighshire, North Wales, situated between the Old Colwyn to the west and the sea to the north. History Opened 1 August 1862 by the London and North Western Railway, it was served by what is now the North Wales Coast Line between Chester, Cheshire and Holyhead, Anglesey. Initially known as ''Llandulas station'', it was changed to Llysfaen in 1889 when a new station, was built nearer Llanddulas. A basic signal box was built near the station. This helped to control traffic in and out of the sidings used by Imperial Chemical Industries to serve its nearby quarry. It was improved to a brick building in 1870 and further improved in 1902. In 1868 the LNWR was criticised by the Board of Trade during their report following the Abergele rail disaster. Llysfaen
Llysfaen is a village and community in Conwy County Borough overlooking the north coast of Wales, and situated on the hill Mynydd Marian. For local government purposes, it is also a ward. The community includes the Peulwys estate of Old Colwyn. Introduction Llysfaen located one kilometre (0.6 miles) inland, halfway between the coastal towns of Abergele and Colwyn Bay. Neighbouring villages include Old Colwyn, Llanddulas, Dolwen and Betws-yn-Rhos. To its immediate west is Mynydd Marian, a mountain known for its limestone grassland and the rare dwarf subspecies of the silver-studded blue butterfly, and Craig y Forwyn is to the east. Abergele Rail Disaster
The Abergele rail disaster, which took place near Abergele, North Wales, in August 1868, was the worst railway disaster in Great Britain up till then. The Irish Mail train was on its way from London to Holyhead, when a complicated shunting operation caused the derailment of a goods train at Llanddulas, the nearest sidings to Abergele, blocking the main line. In the confusion, a brake-van and six wagons loaded with paraffin were left uncoupled on a gradient leading down to Abergele, and a collision with other carriages caused it to run downhill into the path of the Irish Mail, exploding on impact. Flames and smoke made rescue impossible, and 33 people died in the crash, some of them burned beyond recognition.
