Lloyd E. Jones
Lloyd E. Jones (June 17, 1889 – January 3, 1958) was a United States Army major general. A veteran of World War I, he was prominent during World War II as commander of the Alaska Defense Command's Amchitka Task Force and the 10th Mountain Division. The son of the president of the University of Missouri, Jones attended the university while teaching school and serving in the Missouri National Guard. He served in the Philippines after receiving his Army commission in 1912. During World War I he was an instructor at two officers’ training camps, organized and temporarily commanded an Artillery brigade, and completed an advanced field artillery course in France. After World War I, Jones graduated from the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College, and served in a variety of command and staff assignments, including professor of military science for the University of Missouri's Reserve Officers' Training Corps program. United States Army War College
The United States Army War College (USAWC) is a U.S. Army educational institution in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on the 500-acre (2 km2) campus of the historic Carlisle Barracks. It provides graduate-level instruction to senior military officers and civilians to prepare them for senior leadership assignments and responsibilities. The 6th Field Artillery Regiment is a Field Artillery Branch regiment of the United States Army first activated in 1907 from numbered companies of artillery. It was first organized with two battalions. 6th Field Artillery assigned 8 June 1917 to the 1st Expeditionary Division 1st Division">1st Infantry Division (United States)">1st Division relieved 16 October 1939 from assignment to the 1st Division; assigned 22 June 1940 to the 8th Division; relieved 20 July 1940 from assignment to the 8th Division. The Field Artillery Branch is a combat arms branch of the United States Army that is responsible for field artillery. Historical background The U.S. Army Field Artillery branch traces its origins to 17 November 1775 when the Continental Congress, unanimously elected Henry Knox "Colonel of the Regiment of Artillery". The regiment formally entered service on 1 January 1776. During the 19th Century a total of seven Artillery regiments were formed which contained a mixture of "heavy" artillery companies and "light" artillery batteries. The light artillery batteries took the role of field artillery although they did not use that designation. Army Ground Forces
The Army Ground Forces were one of the three autonomous components of the Army of the United States during World War II, the others being the Army Air Forces and Army Service Forces. Throughout their existence, Army Ground Forces were the largest training organization ever established in the United States. Its strength of 780,000 troops on 1 May 1942 grew to a peak of 2,200,000 by 1 July 1943. Thereafter its strength declined as units departed for overseas theaters. He earned the Medal of Honor as a young artillery officer during the Second Battle of the Marne in World War I. Amchitka (; ale, Amchixtax̂; russian: Амчитка) is a volcanic, tectonically unstable and uninhabited island in the Rat Islands group of the Aleutian Islands in southwest Alaska.
