Lloyd Budd
William Lloyd Budd (25 October 1913 – 23 August 1986) was an English first-class cricketer and international cricket umpire. Budd initially played first-class cricket for Hampshire County Cricket Club between 1934 and 1938, and briefly following the Second World War. He later became an umpire, standing in four Test matches and twelve One Day Internationals from 1976 to 1979. Playing career Budd was born in October 1913 at Hawkley, Hampshire. A right-arm fast-medium bowler and a hard-hitting lower order batsman, Budd made his debut in first-class cricket for Hampshire against Leicestershire at Bournemouth in the 1934 County Championship. He appeared infrequently, but was utilised the most by Hampshire in 1935 and 1937, when he played in 22 and 19 matches respectively. Hawkley
Hawkley is a village and civil parish in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, England. It is 3.5 miles (5.7 km) north of Petersfield, to the west of the A3 road. Walter Pearce (English Cricketer)
Walter Kennedy Pearce (2 April 1893 — 31 July 1960) was an English first-class cricketer, cricket administrator, and solicitor. The son of Arthur William Pearce (1858–1928) and his wife Frederica Emma, née Maund (1853–1932), he was born in April 1893 at Bassett in Southampton. He was educated at Malvern College. After completing his education at Malvern, Pearce was commissioned into the Hampshire Regiment as a second lieutenant in December 1912, with promotion to lieutenant in June 1914. He served with the Hampshire Regiment during the First World War, during which he was promoted to captain in April 1917, antedated to June 1916. Following the war, he relinquished his commission in July 1921. Transferring to the Territorial Army Reserve, he was promoted to major in October 1922. Essex County Cricket Club
Essex County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Essex. Founded in 1876, the club had minor county status until 1894 when it was promoted to first-class status pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895, since then the team has played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. List A cricket is a classification of the limited-overs (one-day) form of the sport of cricket, with games lasting up to eight hours. List A cricket includes One Day International (ODI) matches and various domestic competitions in which the number of overs in an innings per team ranges from forty to sixty, as well as some international matches involving nations who have not achieved official ODI status. Club cricket is a mainly amateur, but still formal, form of the sport of cricket, usually involving teams playing in competitions at weekends or in the evening. There is a great deal of variation in game format although the Laws of Cricket are observed. Batting Average (cricket)
In cricket, a player's batting average is the total number of runs they have scored divided by the number of times they have been out, usually given to two decimal places. Since the number of runs a player scores and how often they get out are primarily measures of their own playing ability, and largely independent of their teammates, batting average is a good metric for an individual player's skill as a batter (although the practice of drawing comparisons between players on this basis is not without criticism). The number is also simple to interpret intuitively. If all the batter's innings were completed (i.e. they were out every innings), this is the average number of runs they score per innings. 1946 County Championship
The 1946 County Championship was the 47th officially organised running of the County Championship. Yorkshire County Cricket Club won their 22nd Championship title. The Championship was the first for six years due to World War II and was decided on total points scored instead of the previous system of averages. All teams played 26 games. Review The 1946 County Championship had all teams scheduled to play 26 matches, although there were many incomplete games because of the weather "may be written down as the worst in living memory". Teams were awarded 12 points for a win and could also claim points for first innings lead in matches drawn or lost. In the end, the team with the most wins finished first and the team with the second most wins finished second, so the additional points did not really impact the outcome. London Counties Cricket Team
London Counties was a representative cricket side that was formed during the Second World War by Charles Jones. Upon the outbreak of the Second World War, the government issued an order "closing all places of entertainment and outdoor sports meetings".Hayes & Hill, p.128. However, this was soon rescinded and there was instead an emphasis placed on "business as usual" through the war. Sports began to resume once more with a limited schedule. The County Championship was cancelled, but county sides put out teams to play against each other and against representative sides. Charles Jones formed London Counties, a side that played their games at Lord's Cricket Ground, and other locations around London. London Counties played its first recorded game, a two-day match against Northamptonshire XI on 18 May 1940, winning by 128 runs. Glamorgan County Cricket Club ( cy, Criced Morgannwg) is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Glamorgan ( cy, Morgannwg).
