Liz Slooten
Elisabeth Slooten is a New Zealand zoology academic. She is currently a full professor at the University of Otago. Biography After secondary school in the Netherlands and a BSc and MSc in marine biology at the University of Auckland, Slooten completed a 1990 PhD from the University of Canterbury entitled ''Population biology, social organization and behaviour of Hector's Dolphins''. Moving to the University of Otago for an extended period, she rose to the rank of full professor in 2015. In 2004, Slooten and Stephen Michael Dawson won the Charles Fleming Award for environmental achievement from the Royal Society of New Zealand. University Of Canterbury
The University of Canterbury ( mi, Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha; postnominal abbreviation ''Cantuar.'' or ''Cant.'' for ''Cantuariensis'', the Latin name for Canterbury) is a public research university based in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was founded in 1873 as Canterbury College, the first constituent college of the University of New Zealand. Hector's Dolphins
Hector's dolphin (''Cephalorhynchus hectori'') is one of four dolphin species belonging to the genus ''Cephalorhynchus''. Hector's dolphin is the only cetacean endemic to New Zealand, and comprises two subspecies: ''C. h. hectori'', the more numerous subspecies, also referred to as South Island Hector's dolphin; and the critically endangered Māui dolphin (''C. h. maui''), found off the West Coast of the North Island. Etymology Hector's dolphin was named after Sir James Hector (1834–1907), who was the curator of the Colonial Museum in Wellington (now the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa). He examined the first specimen of the dolphin found by cephologists. The species was scientifically described by Belgian zoologist Pierre-Joseph van Beneden in 1881. Charles Fleming Award For Environmental Achievement
The Fleming Award is an environmental science award bestowed every three years by the Royal Society of New Zealand, which recognises "protection, maintenance, management, improvement or understanding of the environment, in particular the sustainable management of the New Zealand environment". A woman is an adult female human. Prior to adulthood, a female human is referred to as a girl (a female child or adolescent).
