The Livingston Avenue Historic District is a historic district located along Livingston Avenue between Hale and Morris Streets in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 16, 1996, for its significance in architecture, social history, and urban history from 1870 to 1929. It has 58 contributing buildings and 2 contributing sites, including the Willow Grove Cemetery, the Henry Guest House, and the New Brunswick Free Public Library. Civic Square is the government district in downtown New Brunswick, the county seat of Middlesex County, New Jersey. New Brunswick Free Public Library
The New Brunswick Free Public Library is the public library of New Brunswick, New Jersey. The main library, built 1903, is located at 60 Livingston Avenue and is one of New Jersey's Carnegie libraries. The Henry Guest House was moved to library grounds in 1924 and is bordered by the Willow Grove Cemetery. It is a contributing property of the Livingston Avenue Historic District. The library is the only building with Beaux Arts style in the district. Henry Guest House
The Henry Guest House is in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, at Livingston Avenue and Morris Street. It was originally located on New Street (previously known as Carroll Place) between Livingston Avenue and George Street. The Georgian stone farmhouse was built in 1760 by Henry Guest. He was a New Brunswick alderman and an associate of John Adams and author Thomas Paine. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 24, 1976. Henry Guest, who operated a tannery, bought two and a half acres on the corner of Livingston Avenue and Carroll Place (New Street) in 1755. He built a sandstone house five years later and lived there with his family until his death in 1815. Henry Guest said, "If his descendants would only keep a roof on it, the house would stand till Gabriel blew his trumpet." Willow Grove Cemetery
The Willow Grove Cemetery in New Brunswick, New Jersey is located behind the New Brunswick Free Public Library and the Henry Guest House. The cemetery runs along Morris Street, from Livingston Avenue to George Street. It is a contributing site of the Livingston Avenue Historic District. The cemetery was originally a graveyard for Baptist and Presbyterian churches in the early 19th century. It is the burial place of several of the first Japanese exchange students to come to the United States, including Taro Kusakabe, a young samurai of Fukui and student of William Elliot Griffis, who studied at Rutgers University in the late 19th century and died there of tuberculosis. Recently identified, New Brunswick Police Officer William I. Van Arsdale, died in the line of duty on December 7, 1856 at the age of 49 in a drowning in the Delaware Raritan Canal at the end of his shift.
