Living Downstream
''Living Downstream'' is a 2010 feature-length true documentary based on the book by ecologist and cancer survivor Sandra Steingraber, Ph.D. The film was produced by The People's Picture Company. Summary This film follows Sandra during one year as she travels across North America, working to break the silence about cancer and its environmental links. After a routine cancer screening, Sandra receives results that thrust her into a period of medical uncertainty. The film starts the audience on two journeys with Sandra: her private struggles with cancer and her public fight to bring attention to the human rights issue of cancer prevention. A cancer survivor is a person with cancer of any type who is still living. Whether a person becomes a survivor at the time of diagnosis or after completing treatment, whether people who are actively dying are considered survivors, and whether healthy friends and family members of the cancer patient are also considered survivors, varies from group to group. Sandra Steingraber
Sandra Steingraber (born 1959) is an American biologist, author, and cancer survivor. Steingraber writes and lectures on the environmental factors that contribute to reproductive health problems and environmental links to cancer. Early life Steingraber was adopted as an infant. She grew up and spent most of her childhood in Tazewell County, Illinois. Her mother was a microbiologist and her father was a community college professor. Her parents inculcated in her an interest in sustainable development and organic agriculture from a young age. In her 20s, Steingraber developed bladder cancer. In several of her books, she describes an apparent cancer cluster in her hometown and within her family. After her cancer went into remission, Steingraber completed her undergraduate degree in biology from Illinois Wesleyan University.
