Liuzzi-class Submarine
The ''Liuzzi'' class was a class of four submarines built by Tosi in Taranto for the Royal Italian Navy ( it, Regia Marina). The submarines were built in 1939 and began their Second World War service in the Mediterranean Sea, where ''Liuzzi'' was sunk. The three surviving boats were transferred to the BETASOM Atlantic submarine base at Bordeaux in 1940. After ''Tarantini'' was sunk, ''Bagnolini'' and ''Giuliani'' were selected for conversion to " transport submarines" in order to exchange rare or irreplaceable trade goods with Japan. Cargo capacity of 160 tons reduced reserve buoyancy from between 20 and 25% to between 3.5 and 6%; and armament was reduced to defensive machine guns. They submarines saw action in the Second World War during which they collectively sunk 5 freighters and 1 light cruiser and were eventually either sunk or captured. Italian Submarine Console Generale Liuzzi
''Console Generale Liuzzi'' was an Italian ''Liuzzi''-class ocean-going submarine of the Regia Marina, launched in 1939 and sunk in 1940 by Royal Navy destroyers. It was named after Alberto Liuzzi (1898–1937), a '' console generale'' (brigadier general) of the Blackshirts. Design Armament The four submarines of the ''Liuzzi''-class were armed with a single deck gun, four machine guns in twin mounts and eight torpedo tubes, with four reloads for a total of twelve torpedoes carried. History ''Liuzzi'' was built at the Tosi Shipyard in Taranto. She was laid down on 1 October 1938 and launched on 17 September 1939. Loss ''Liuzzi'' was attacked on 27 June 1940 by the British destroyers ''Dainty'', ''Ilex'', ''Decoy'', ''Defender'' and the Australian destroyer ''Voyager'' south of Crete; fatally damaged, she was abandoned and scuttled. Giorgio Liuzzi (1895–1983) was an Italian soldier that was named chief of the staff of Italian Army in 1954. Biography Born in Vercelli, son of Italian army officer Guido Liuzzi, he was accepted to the Modena Military Academy in 1913. In 1915, he was named sottotenente in the 1st Artillery regiment. Liuzzi was wounded twice during World War I, and at the end of war he was a captain on the staff of the 27th Army Corps. After the war, he was part of the Allied Military Commission in Wien. Between World War I and World War II, Liuzzi assumed different duties in the Regio Esercito. In 1938, as colonel in command of the "1st Celere Artillery Regiment", Liuzzi was the director of the military parade that took place during the visit of Adolf Hitler in Rome. Vitantonio "Tonio" Liuzzi (born 6 August 1980) is an Italian professional racing driver who formerly raced in Formula One for the Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Force India and HRT teams.
