Litton, Derbyshire
Litton is a village and civil parish in the Peak District of Derbyshire, England. The population at the 2011 Census was 675 (including Cressbrook (within the parish) and the separate parish of Little Longstone). It is one mile from Tideswell and six miles from Bakewell. The village has a primary school, a public house (the Red Lion) and a post office run by a co-operative of villagers. There are two churches, one at the east end of the village, and Christ Church at the west, on the outskirts of the village on the road to Tideswell. Litton has a well dressing each summer. The display is set on a base of moist clay and the patterns formed from petals, seeds, mosses and lichens. Litton, North Yorkshire
Litton is a village and civil parish in Littondale in the Yorkshire Dales in England. It lies in the Craven District of North Yorkshire, up Littondale from Arncliffe. From Litton a footpath leads over the fells to the north east to Buckden in Wharfedale. The population of the civil parish was estimated at 70 in 2015. The centre of the village is an old public house, the Queens Arms, that dates back to the 17th century. Associated with the Queens Arms since 2003 is the Lamb Brewing Company (previously the Litton Brewery) that brews Litton Ale. Litton was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 (as ''Litone''). The name probably comes from the Old English ''hlið'' "hillside" and ''tūn'' "farmstead". Litton was historically a township in the ancient parish of Arncliffe, part of Staincliffe Wapentake in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Litton became a separate civil parish in 1866. Litton () is a small village and civil parish between Chewton Mendip and West Harptree in the Mendip Hills, Somerset, England. The parish includes the hamlet of Sherborne. Very close to the village are the Litton Reservoirs. History Litton was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ''Litune'', meaning 'The small enclosure' from the Old English ''lyt'' and ''tun''. It was the property of Gisa, Bishop of Wells. The shape of some of the existing fields with cross-slope and down-slope field banks and cultivated ridges forming an interleaving irregular mosaic suggest they are of medieval origin. The parish was part of the hundred of Wells Forum. Litton Industries was a large defense contractor in the United States named after inventor Charles Litton Sr. During the 1960s, the company began acquiring many unrelated firms and became one of the largest conglomerates in the United States. At its peak, in addition to many defense-related companies, it also owned both Royal Typewriters and Adler, Moffat major appliances, Stouffer's frozen foods, and various office equipment and furniture companies. Like many conglomerates, the company suffered significant declines in the 1970s, selling off many of its unrelated brands and had largely returned to its defense roots by the 1980s. The Maytag Corporation is an American home and commercial appliance company owned by Whirlpool Corporation since April 2006. Company history The Maytag Washing Machine Company was founded in 1893 by businessman Frederick Maytag. In 1925, Maytag Washing Machine Company became Maytag, Inc. Frederick's son Elmer Henry Maytag took over as president of the company from 1926 until his own death in 1940. In the early 1930s, photographer Theodor Horydczak took pictures of the plant and some of its workers. During the Great Depression of the 1930s the company was one of the few to make a profit.
