Little Thumb
Hop-o'-My-Thumb (Hop-on-My-Thumb), or Hop o' My Thumb, also known as Little Thumbling, Little Thumb, or Little Poucet (french: Le petit Poucet), is one of the eight fairytales published by Charles Perrault in ''Histoires ou Contes du temps passé'' (1697), now world-renowned. It is Aarne-Thompson type 327B. The small boy defeats the ogre. This type of fairytale, in the French oral tradition, is often combined with motifs from the type 327A, similar to ''Hansel and Gretel''; one such tale is '' The Lost Children''. The story was first published in English as ''Little Poucet'' in Robert Samber's 1729 translation of Perrault's book, "''Histories, or Tales of Past Times''". In 1764, the name of the hero was changed to ''Little Thumb''. In 1804, William Godwin, in "''Tabart's Collection of Popular Stories for the Nursery''", retitled it ''Hop o' my Thumb'', a term that was common in the 16th century, referring to a tiny person. Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré ( , , ; 6 January 1832 – 23 January 1883) was a French artist, as a printmaker, illustrator, painter, comics artist, caricaturist, and sculptor. He is best known for his prolific output of wood-engravings, especially those illustrating classic books, including 241 illustrating the Bible. These achieved great international success, and he is the best-known artist in this printmaking technique, although his role was normally as the designer only; at the height of his career some 40 block-cutters were employed to cut his drawings onto the wooden printing blocks, usually also signing the image. Tom Thumb
Tom Thumb is a character of English folklore. ''The History of Tom Thumb'' was published in 1621 and was the first fairy tale printed in English. Tom is no bigger than his father's thumb, and his adventures include being swallowed by a cow, tangling with giants, and becoming a favourite of King Arthur. The earliest allusions to Tom occur in various 16th-century works such as Reginald Scot's ''Discovery of Witchcraft'' (1584), where Tom is cited as one of the supernatural folk employed by servant maids to frighten children. Tattershall in Lincolnshire, England, reputedly has the home and grave of Tom Thumb. Aside from his own tales, Tom figures in Henry Fielding's 1730 play ''Tom Thumb'', a companion piece to his ''The Author's Farce''. Alexander Zick (born 20 December 1845, Koblenz, Germany – 10 November 1907, Berlin, Germany) was a German painter and illustrator. Alexander was the greatgrandson of the painter and architect Januarius Zick, the son of fresco artist Johannes Zick. He was a student of August Wittig and Eduard Bendemann. Carl Offterdinger (January 8, 1829 in Stuttgart – January 12, 1889 in Stuttgart) was a German figure and genre painter and illustrator. Book illustrations Offterdinger was a student of Heinrich von Rustige. In the second half of the 19th century, Offterdinger illustrated numerous children's books, fairy tales, adventure stories, and broadsheets. Offterdinger is particularly known for his paintings with scenes from fairy tales and illustrations of literary works such as The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Heinrich Leutemann
Gottlob Heinrich (Henrik) Leutemann (8 October 1824 — 14 December 1905) was a German artist and book illustrator. He was born in Leipzig and studied there. He produced lithographs for instructional posters. In the 1850s, he worked on pictures of animals for a zoological Atlas. Some of his drawings include ''Ankunft Junger Leoparden bei Hagenbeck in Hamburg'' ("A box of young leopards arrives at Hagenbeck's Animal Show in Hamburg"), ''Tierkauf in Afrika'' ("Buying animals in Africa"), ''Riesenschlangen-Käfig im Zoologischen Garten Hamburg'' (Giant snakes' cage in the Hamburg Zoo), and ''Manatees'' ("Manatees"). Steve Rasnic Tem
Steve Rasnic Tem (born 1950) is an American author. He was born in Jonesville, Virginia. Rasnic attended college at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and also at Virginia Commonwealth University. He earned a B.A. in English education. In 1974, he moved to Colorado and studied creative writing at Colorado State University. He married Melanie Kubachko, and the couple took the joint surname "Tem". They had four children and lived in Colorado. Rasnic Tem's short fiction has been compared to the work of Franz Kafka, Dino Buzzati, Ray Bradbury, and Raymond Carver, but to quote Joe R. Lansdale: "Steve Rasnic Tem is a school of writing unto himself." His 200 plus published pieces have garnered him a British Fantasy Award, a World Fantasy Award and a nomination for the Bram Stoker Awards. ''The Sleeping Beauty'' ( rus, Спящая красавица, Spyashchaya krasavitsa ) is a ballet in a prologue and three acts, first performed in 1890. The music was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Opus 66). The score was completed in 1889, and is the second of his three ballets. The original scenario was conceived by Ivan Vsevolozhsky, and is based on Charles Perrault's '' La Belle au bois dormant''. The choreographer of the original production was Marius Petipa. The premiere performance took place at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on January 15, 1890. The work has become one of the classical repertoire's most famous ballets.
