Little Ossipee River
The Little Ossipee River is a U.S. Geological Survey. National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution flowline dataThe National Map, accessed June 30, 2011 tributary of the Saco River in southwestern Maine, USA. It rises at the outlet of Balch Pond in the town of Newfield and flows east, passing through Shapleigh Pond and flowing past the village of North Shapleigh. Forming the boundary between Newfield and the town of Shapleigh, the river flows northeast, then reenters Newfield, passing the town center. Turning east, the river becomes the boundary between the towns of Limerick (to the north) and Waterboro (to the south). It passes through Lake Arrowhead, a reservoir with a surrounding lakeside community, then continues northeast and north into the town of Limington, where it joins the Saco near the village of East Limington. Newfield, ME
Newfield is a town in York County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,648 at the 2020 census. The town is part of the Portland– South Portland–Biddeford metropolitan statistical area. Newfield is home to a museum called Willowbrook Museum Village. History This was part of the large tract sold on November 28, 1668, by Newichawannock Indian Chief Sunday (or Wesumbe) to Francis Small, a Kittery trader. The price was two large Indian blankets, two gallons of rum, two pounds of gunpowder, four pounds of musket balls and twenty strings of beads. The township was surveyed and first settled as Washington Plantation in 1778. A number of settlers had been soldiers in the Revolutionary War. It was incorporated as Newfield on February 25, 1794, and by 1859, the population was 1,418. Balch Pond
Balch Pond is a water body located on the New Hampshire-Maine border, in the towns of Wakefield, New Hampshire, and Acton and Newfield, Maine. A northwest portion of the lake in New Hampshire is known as Stump Pond. Water flows from the eastern end of Balch Pond into the Little Ossipee River, a tributary of the Saco River. Shapleigh, pronounced "SHAP-lee", is a town in York County, Maine, United States which was incorporated as the state's 43rd town in 1785. The population was 2,921 at the 2020 census. Shapleigh is divided into the villages of North Shapleigh, Shapleigh Corner, Ross Corner and Emery Mills. It is part of the Portland– South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area. Limington is a town in York County, Maine, United States. The population was 3,892 at the 2020 census. Limington is a tourist destination with historic architecture.
