Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. James Acton
James Acton (11 October 1848 – 22 August 1924) was an English first-class cricketer. Acton's batting and bowling styles are unknown. Early life He was born at Southampton, Hampshire on 11 October 1848. Career Acton made two first-class appearances for Hampshire, against the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1880 and Somerset in 1882. Against the Marylebone Cricket Club, Acton was dismissed for 31 in Hampshire's first-innings by John West, with Hampshire winning the match by an innings. Against Somerset, he scored two runs in Hampshire's first-innings, before being dismissed by Bill Fowler. In their second-innings he was dismissed for eight runs by Robert Ramsay, with Somerset losing by five wickets. Death Acton died at Reading, Berkshire on 22 August 1924. Steve Andrew (born 27 January 1966) is an English first-class and List A cricketer who played First-class cricket for Hampshire County Cricket Club and Essex County Cricket Club. He also played for these teams in List A games and he also played List A games for Hertfordshire. His highest score in First-class cricket of 35 came when playing for Essex in the match against Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. His best bowling in First-class cricket of 7/47 came when playing for Essex in the match against Lancashire County Cricket Club. Harry Altham
Harry Surtees Altham (30 November 1888 – 11 March 1965) was an English cricketer who became an important figure in the game as an administrator, historian and coach. His ''Wisden'' obituary described him as "among the best known personalities in the world of cricket". He died of a heart attack just after he had given an address to a cricket society. Altham was educated at Repton School and Trinity College, Oxford, and served in the British Army during World War I as a Major with the 60th Rifles. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and the Military Cross (MC), and was mentioned in despatches on three occasions. He was a schoolmaster and a cricket coach at Winchester College, a position that he held for thirty years, and was also the housemaster of Chernocke House. Thomas Philip Alsop (born 26 November 1995) is an English first-class cricketer. Born in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, Alsop is a left-handed batsman (cricket), batsman who plays as a wicket-keeper, and plays for Sussex County Cricket Club, Sussex. Cecil Allenby
Captain Marmaduke Cecil Allenby (1873–1932), was a British Royal Navy officer and an English first-class cricketer who played for Hampshire County Cricket Club. He also played for Devon County Cricket Club on two occasions in the Minor Counties Cricket Championship. Allenby was born on 30 August 1873. He was commissioned in the Royal Navy. Kabir Ali
Kabir Ali (born 24 November 1980) is an English former cricketer. A right-arm seam bowler and useful lower-order right-handed batsman, he played one Test match for England in 2003, while also earning 14 ODI caps between 2003 and 2006. He started his playing career in 1999 at Worcestershire, spending 12 years in the first-team squad, before stints at Hampshire and Lancashire, where he retired in 2015. Basil Akram
Basil Mohammad Ramzan Akram (born 23 February 1993) is an English former first-class cricketer. Akram was born at Waltham Forest in February 1993. He was educated at Brentwood School, before matriculating to Loughborough University. Having represented Essex at youth level, Akram made his debut in first-class cricket for Loughborough MCCU against Sussex at Hove in 2014, with him claiming the wicket of England Test cricketer Matt Prior. He made his second first-class appearance for Loughborough the following season, against Hampshire. In September 2014, Akram signed a development contract with Hampshire for the 2015 season. Robert Airey
Robert Berkeley Airey (21 September 1874 – 23 June 1933) was an English first-class cricketer and an officer in the British Army. The son of Robert Airey senior, he was born in September 1874 at Southminster, Essex. Airey was educated at Tonbridge School, before attending the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. He graduated from there as a second lieutenant into the South Wales Borderers in March 1895. He transferred to the Army Service Corps (ASC) in January 1898, at which point he was also promoted to lieutenant, with a further promotion to captain following in January 1901. He saw active service in the Second Boer War in South Africa, from which he returned in September 1902. Ronnie Aird
Ronald Aird (4 May 1902 – 16 August 1986) was an English first-class cricketer and administrator. Ronnie Aird was born in Paddington, London. After Eton, he went up to Clare College, Cambridge, winning his blue in 1923. He played 136 first-class matches as a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium bowler for Cambridge University and Hampshire between 1920 and 1938. He was a good cricketer, but he will be remembered for his work at Lord's for sixty years. He was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1926, following the promotion of W. Findlay to Secretary. He continued to serve under Colonel Rait Kerr, until his eventual appointment as Secretary in 1952.
