Bletchley Park
Bletchley Park is an English country house and estate in Bletchley, Milton Keynes ( Buckinghamshire) that became the principal centre of Allied code-breaking during the Second World War. The mansion was constructed during the years following 1883 for the financier and politician Sir Herbert Leon in the Victorian Gothic, Tudor, and Dutch Baroque styles, on the site of older buildings of the same name. During World War II, the estate housed the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS), which regularly penetrated the secret communications of the Axis Powersmost importantly the German Enigma and Lorenz ciphers. The GC&CS team of codebreakers included Alan Turing, Gordon Welchman, Hugh Alexander, Bill Tutte, and Stuart Milner-Barry. The nature of the work at Bletchley remained secret until many years after the war. Margaret Cooper (WRNS Officer)
Margaret Elizabeth Cooper (née Douglas; 25 January 1918 – 18 July 2016) was a member of the Women's Royal Naval Service during the Second World War who worked at the signal interception and deciphering centre at Bletchley Park, England. Early life Cooper was born Margaret Elizabeth Douglas in Punta del Este, Uruguay, on 25 January 1918. Her father, Jack Douglas, originally from Canada, owned a beach house across the River Plate from Argentina, where he owned a beef ranch. Her mother Vera was Anglo-Argentinian, and she had three siblings, Katherine, Evelyn and Sholto Douglas. She was educated at St Mary's School, Wantage, in England. Career Cooper joined the Women's Royal Naval Service ("Wrens") in September 1941. Dorothy Hyson, Lady Quayle (born Dorothy Wardell Heisen; December 24, 1914May 23, 1996) was an American-born film and stage actress who worked largely in England. Rosalind Audrey Clare Hudson (née Latham; 31 July 1926 – 7 July 2013) was a British codebreaker and architectural model maker. Early life Rosalind was educated at Adcote School, Shropshire. In her early years she developed a love for architecture. Being the granddaughter of Walter Aubrey Thomas, who designed the Royal Liver Building, Hudson also constructed architectural models. Hudson attempted to further her career in architecture at the Liverpool School of Art, but she eventually dropped out during World War II to join the Women's Royal Naval Service. Sigrid Augusta Green
Sigrid Augusta Green (3 December 1920 – 12 October 2012) gathered intelligence in preparation for the sabotage of the Telemark plant during the Second World War. She worked for the Norwegian Resistance and then as a code breaker at Bletchley Park. Life and work Sigrid Augusta Green, known as Gusta, was born in Darwen, Lancashire, to a Norwegian mother and a British father. Her mother had moved to the UK to work as an au pair and married. Green joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force at the age of 22, on 10 December 1942. Her bilingual ability from her Norwegian mother (Edith Stafford Green) was quickly recognised and she was transferred to the Norwegian Resistance. She was sent secretly to Nazi-occupied Norway to research the heavy water factory at Telemark owned by Sigrid’s uncle, which was being used to produce heavy water to further the Nazis’ nuclear ambitions.
