This is a list of universities in South Africa. In this list, colleges and universities are defined as accredited, degree-granting, tertiary institutions. As of September 2022, only South African public degree-granting institutions may call themselves a "university", whereas other accredited private for-profit or not-for-profit degree-granting institutions tend to call themselves colleges, institutes or business schools. Some of these private institutions are local campuses of foreign universities. Degree-granting institutions (both public and private) must be registered with, and have their specific degree programs accredited by, the Council on Higher Education. In 2004 South Africa started reforming its public higher education system, merging and incorporating small public universities into larger institutions, and renaming all higher education institutions "university" (previously there had been several types of higher education institution). The University of the Western Cape (UWC; ) is a Public university, public research university in Bellville, South Africa, Bellville, near Cape Town, South Africa. The university was established in 1959 by the Politics of South Africa, South African apartheid government as a university for Coloured people only. Other universities in Cape Town are the University of Cape Town (originally for English-speaking White (people), whites), Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and Stellenbosch University (originally for Afrikaans-speaking whites). University Of Limpopo
The University of Limpopo () is a public university in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. It was formed on 1 January 2005, by merger of the University of the North and the Medical University of South Africa (MEDUNSA). These previous institutions formed the Mankweng, Turfloop and MEDUNSA campuses of the university, respectively. In 2015 the MEDUNSA campus split and became the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. History The University of the North, nicknamed "Turfloop" after its location, was established in 1959 under the apartheid regime's policy of separate ethnically-based institutions of higher learning policy. The university was sited at Mankweng, Turfloop farm about east of Pietersburg. Westville, KwaZulu-Natal
Westville is an area in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and is just west and 10 km inland from the Durban CBD. It was formerly an independent municipality and became part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality in 2002. The climate is subtropical; Westville experiences mild, dry winters, and hot, humid summers with frequent late afternoon downpours. Pinetown
Pinetown is a city that forms part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, based just inland from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The city is situated 16 km (10 mi) north-west of Durban and 64 km (40 mi) south-east of Pietermaritzburg. Until December 2023, Pinetown (excl. New Germany) maintained a distinct vehicular identity through its "NPN” registration plate prefix, representing Natal Pinetown. History Pinetown was named after the governor of Natal, Sir Benjamin Pine. QwaQwa was a Bantustan ("homeland") in the central eastern part of South Africa. It encompassed a very small region of in the east of the former South African province of Orange Free State, bordering Lesotho. Its capital was Witsieshoek.
