This is a list of English language small presses, small publishers, current or past, that have published (printed) works of fiction and nonfiction, poetry, short stories, essays, pamphlets, limited edition or collectible books and chapbooks, and other forms of literature. In addition to publishing few books per year, the print runs of their titles are often smaller than for books from larger publishers. This list does include periodic publishers of poetry, and literature journals and magazines, including alternative comic books. This list does not include exclusively online publishers, academic publishers (who often publish very limited print runs, but for a different market), or businesses operating solely as printers, such as print-on-demand companies or vanity presses. Small Press
A small press is a publisher with annual sales below a certain level or below a certain number of titles published. The terms "indie publisher" and "independent press" and others are sometimes used interchangeably. Independent press is generally defined as publishers that are not part of large conglomerates or multinational corporations. Many small presses rely on specialization in genre fiction, poetry, or limited-edition books or magazines, but there are also thousands that focus on niche non-fiction markets. Definitions In the United States, this has been mentioned as publishers with annual turnover of under $50 million, or those that publish on average 10 or fewer titles per year. Armida Publications is an independent publishing house based in Nicosia, Cyprus. Founded in 1997 their primary goal is to promote high-level English-language publications from Cyprus, Greece, and the Eastern Mediterranean region in general. Their focus on Eastern Mediterranean enables them to carry titles from authors worldwide who have the region at the core of their work. Over the course of their history, they have won and have been nominated for awards for literature from the European Union and also the International Rubery Book Award. Their title ''To Peirama'' (The Experiment) by Myrto Azina Chronides won the European Union Prize for Literature for Cyprus in 2011. Blue Moon Press
Charles Lahr (27 July 1885 – 1971), born Carl Lahr, was a German-born anarchist, London bookseller and publisher. Lahr was born at Bad Nauheim in the Rhineland, the eldest of 15 children in a farming family. He left Germany in 1905 to avoid military service and went to London, England where he lived until his death in 1971. In London he encountered the anarchist Guy Aldred (1886–1963), while working as a baker. He was soon (1907) under police observation. He joined the Industrial Workers of the World in 1914; at that time he had a bookshop in Hammersmith. In 1915 he was interned for four years as an enemy alien in Alexandra Palace. In 1920-22 he was briefly a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain; he was excluded from membership in October 1922 on the grounds of 'political unreliability'. Black Sun Press
The Black Sun Press was an English language press noted for publisher, publishing the early works of many Literary modernism, modernist writers including Hart Crane, D. H. Lawrence, Archibald MacLeish, Ernest Hemingway, and Eugene Jolas. It enjoyed the greatest longevity among the several expatriate presses founded in Paris during the 1920s, publishing nearly three times as many titles as did Edward Titus under his Black Manikin Press. American expatriates living in Paris, Harry Crosby and his wife Caresse Crosby (American inventor of the modern bra) founded the press to publish their own work in April 1927 as ''Éditions Narcisse''. They added to that in 1928 when they printed a limited edition of 300 numbered copies of "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe. Black Lawrence Press is an independent publishing company founded in upstate New York by Colleen Ryor. It was an imprint of Dzanc Books from 2008 to 2013. It hosts the Big Moose Prize for the novel, the Hudson Prize and the St. Lawrence Book Award. In addition to fiction and poetry, it also publishes French and German translations. The executive editor is Diane Goettel and the senior editor is Angela Leroux-Lindsey, who also manages ''The Adirondack Review''. Bitter Lemon Press is a small London-based independent publisher, set up by Francois von Hurter in 2003 which specialises in translated literary crime novels and romans noirs from abroad. Between The Lines Books
Between the Lines Books (BTL) is an independent Toronto-based publisher of non-fiction, most of which offers a critical perspective on culture, economics, and society. Since its inception in 1977, BTL has published approximately 250 titles of which more than half are maintained in print, including seminal works by American cultural theorists bell hooks and Noam Chomsky. In 2012, BTL won the Wilson Prize for Publishing Canadian History. Bellevue Literary Press (BLP) is an American publisher. It was founded in 2007 as a sister organization of Bellevue Literary Review, located at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. It became an independent nonprofit in 2018. According to their website, "[Bellevue Literary Press] is the first and only nonprofit press dedicated to literary fiction and nonfiction at the intersection of the arts and sciences." Backwaters Press
''The Backwaters Press'' was a small press based in Omaha, Nebraska. It was a 501(c)(3) non-profit devoted to publishing poetry and literary fiction, with a special emphasis on the literature of Nebraska. The press was acquired in 2018 by The University of Nebraska Press and continues as a general interest imprint of UNP. The Backwaters Prize continues under UNP's auspices.
