Southampton
Southampton () is a port city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire in southern England. It is located approximately south-west of London and west of Portsmouth. The city forms part of the South Hampshire built-up area, which also covers Portsmouth and the towns of Havant, Waterlooville, Eastleigh, Fareham and Gosport. St George Catholic VA College (formerly known as St George Catholic School for Girls & Boys) is a Catholic voluntary aided comprehensive secondary school for girls and boys in Swaythling, Southampton, Hampshire. The college became a mixed school in September 2013 and is operated under the auspices of the Diocese of Portsmouth. History St George was founded as a coeducational school and opened its doors to students on 8 September 1958. It was officially opened on Saint George's Day 1959 by the Bishop of Portsmouth John Henry King, Bishop of Portsmouth. The number of students rose to over 600 over the next decade. King Edward VI School (also known as King Edward's, or KES) is a selective co-educational independent school founded in Southampton, United Kingdom, in 1553. The school was founded at the request of William Capon, who bequeathed money in his will for a grammar school for the poor. King Edward VI signed the necessary Royal Charter in 1553 and the school opened in 1554. King Edward's became an independent school in 1978 and accepted girls into the sixth form in 1983. It was established in 1906 and was originally a mixed secondary school, it later became Itchen Grammar School under the reforms of the Butler Education Act. It became its present state following further reform in the 1980s. Weston Secondary School is a coeducational secondary school located in the Weston, Southampton, Weston area of Southampton, in the English county of Hampshire.
