Raï
Raï (, ; , , ), sometimes written rai, is a form of Algerian folk music that dates back to the 1920s. Singers of Raï are called () or (), i.e. 'young', as opposed to (, 'shaykh'), i.e. 'old', the name given to Chaabi singers. The tradition arose in the city of Oran, primarily among the poor. Traditionally sung by men, by the end of the 20th century, female singers became common. The lyrics have concerned social issues such as disease and the policing of European colonies that affected native populations. ''La Voix du Nord'' (; or 'The Voice of Nord') is a regional daily newspaper from the north of France. Its headquarters are in Lille. History ''Voix du Nord'' was one of the underground newspapers of the French Resistance founded in German-occupied France during World War II. The paper first appeared in Lille in April 1941 at a time when the region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais was being ruled by a German military government in Brussels. The newspaper's tag-line described itself as the "Resistance organ of French Flanders." The post-war version of the paper is part of the Belgian company, Rossel group, which also owns the major Belgian newspaper ''Le Soir'', which it bought from Socpresse in 2006. Rachid Taha
Rachid Taha (, Latn, ar, Rashīd Ṭāhā, ; 18 September 1958 – 12 September 2018) was an Algerian people, Algerian singer and activist based in France described as "sonically adventurous". His music was influenced by many different styles including rock and roll, rock, Electronic music, electronic, Punk rock, punk and raï. Early life Taha was born on 18 September 1958 in Sig, Algeria, Sig, Mascara Province, Algeria, although a second source suggests he was born in the Algerian seacoast city of Oran. This town was the "birthplace of raï" music, and 1958 was a key year in the Algerian struggle for independence against French authority. Rachid Baba Ahmed
Rachid Baba Ahmed (; 20 August 1946–15 February 1995) was an Algerian record producer, composer, and singer involved in the regional genre known as raï. He was credited with the international popularization of the genre in 1976, through the new pop raï, with a delicate and sophisticated blend of electronic instrumentation. He was also credited with the development of pop raï during the 1970s and 1980s, 1 the performers of which are called ''cheb'' or ''chaba''. Career Rachid Baba produced an album titled ''Rai Rebels'', among many other acclaimed titles released in the United States and elsewhere. Najim (singer)
Najim Amari, better known by the mononym Najim () also known as Cheb Najim () (born 18 January 1985, Suresnes, Hauts-de-Seine) is an Algerian raï singer. Biography Najim was born in France to an Algerian father and a French mother. Upon his parents' separation, Najim, just 3 months old, moved to Algeria to live with his grandparents in Bordj Bou Arréridj, in east Algeria. He started in music very young at 6 with his uncles who were accomplished musicians. He performed on many social occasions singing mostly Sétifian music. At 15 he accompanied his uncles on a musical tour that took him to major Algerian cities. He also appeared on shows on Algerian television. in 2001, the 17-year-old Najim was reunited with his mother for the first time. In 2003, after finishing his studies, he moved permanently to France performing at different night spots in and around Paris. Messaoud Bellemou () is an Algerian musician and one of the most influential performers of modern raï music. He is considered by some people to be one of the fathers of Modern Raï Music. Houari Manar
Houari Manar (; born Houari Madani, ; 18 December 1981 – 7 January 2019) was an Algerian raï singer who was popular in his home country as well as the neighbouring Maghreb and Mediterranean countries, and in France. Early life Houari Manar was born Houari El Madani in Oran into a family with 12 brothers and sisters. His mother was a popular ''meddahate'' singer; a traditional folk music performer at festivals and weddings. Two of his brothers, Cheb Massaro and Cheb Larbi, are also raï singers. The family moved to Marseille, France, when he was four. In his youth, he was inspired, in part, by singers such as Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Francis Cabrel. Mourad Gana (; born 2 February 1958), known professionally as Gana El Maghnaoui (), is an Algerian raï songwriter, lyricist and composer. Biography From Maghnia (Tlemcen Province), Mourad Gana, better known under the name Gana El Maghnaoui, was born 2 February 1958 in Maghnia, Algeria. As a musician, he plays the violin as well as the trumpet. His debut in rai music dates back to 1973. He was part of the orchestra of the Oran section of the RTA (1974–1980), then in Algiers. In 1978, he released two EPs and a year later he recorded an 8 track cassette. Faudel Belloua (; born June 6, 1978) is a French raï singer and actor of Algerian descent. He released studio albums, notably '' Baïda'', '' Samra'', ''Un Autre Soleil'' and ''Mundial Corrida'' and the live album '' 1,2,3 Soleils'' jointly with Khaled and Rachid Taha. Fadela and Sahraoui were a renowned Algerian raï vocal duo, consisting of Cheb Sahraoui (born Mohammed Sahraoui, Tlemcen, Algeria, 1 April 1961) and Chaba Fadela (born Fadela Zalmat, Oran, Algeria, 5 February 1962). Cheikha Rimitti
Cheikha Rimitti (; 8 May 1923 – 15 May 2006), born Saadia El Ghizania (), was an Algerian raï female singer. Early life Cheikha Rimitti was born in Tessala, a small village in western Algeria in 1923. She is from the major Berber tribe Beni Ouragh. She had been orphaned as a child due to violent French occupation and began to live rough, earning a few francs working in the fields and doing other manual jobs. Early musical career At age 15, she joined a troupe of traditional Algerian musicians and learnt to sing and dance. In 1943 she moved to the rural town of Relizane and began writing her own songs.
