Public Art
Public art is art in any Media (arts), media whose form, function and meaning are created for the general public through a public process. It is a specific art genre with its own professional and critical discourse. Public art is visually and physically accessible to the public; it is installed in public space in both outdoor and indoor settings. Public art seeks to embody public or universal concepts rather than commercial, partisan or personal concepts or interests. Notably, public art is also the direct or indirect product of a public process of creation, procurement, and/or maintenance. Independent art created or staged in or near the public realm (for example, graffiti, street art) lacks official or tangible public sanction has not been recognized as part of the public art genre, however this attitude is changing due to the efforts of several street artists. Twisted House
''Twisted House'' is a public artwork by American artist John McNaughton, located at the Indianapolis Art Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. ''Twisted House'' was installed as part of the center's ARTSPARK initiative. Description The sculpture is made of cedar wood and depicts a tall house, bent in such a way that it appears to rest on its foundation and roof. The roof of the house digs into the forest floor and five square, glass windows travel upwards on the house and a distorted door juts to the right, open for viewers to interact with—inside one can step and look out a large window looking out into the forest. The windows each have sills with exterior flower holders and fake wood flowers. The piece sits on natural stone placed in the ground and the dirt of the forest grounds. Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is an alloy of iron that is resistant to rusting and corrosion. Empire Towers
''Empire Towers'' is a public artwork by sculptor R.M. Fischer. It currently resides on the grounds of the Indianapolis Art Center Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. It is on loan from the Carl Solway Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio. Description ''Empire Towers'' consists of two stainless steel grain silos standing tall on four poles. The tops of the silos are capped off with designs that are similar to those found on Royal Guard helmets. Artist Sculptor R.M. Siding (construction)
Siding or wall cladding is the protective material attached to the exterior side of a wall of a house or other building. Along with the roof, it forms the first line of defense against the elements, most importantly sun, rain/snow, heat and cold, thus creating a stable, more comfortable environment on the interior side. The siding material and style also can enhance or detract from the building's beauty. Steel
Steel is an alloy made up of iron with added carbon to improve its strength and fracture resistance compared to other forms of iron. Many other elements may be present or added. Stainless steels that are corrosion- and oxidation-resistant typically need an additional 11% chromium. Brose Partington
Brose Partington is an Indianapolis-based kinetic sculptor. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1998 and earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Herron School of Art & Design in 2004. His artworks have been shown in numerous cities across the United States including New York, Chicago, Miami, Indianapolis, and Los Angeles; in European galleries, and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Work Partington's work is inspired by "movements around us and the patterns those movements create." In Indianapolis, Partington's sculptures have been exhibited at the Harrison Center for the Arts, Primary Colours, and Flux Space in group exhibitions. Dawnsong
''Dawnsong'' is a public artwork by American artist Brose Partington, located at Indianapolis Art Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. ''Dawnsong'' was installed as part of the center's ARTSPARK initiative. Description ''Dawnsong'' is a kinetic sculpture that serves as an interactive bike rack. A steel obelisk with a hand-crank on it juts upwards with a birdhouse resting on the top. The aluminum bird house has multiple holes throughout its multiple "stories." When the hand-crank is turned the house expands and contracts slightly. The sculpture is placed at the Efroymson Canoe Launch area along the White River near the Monon Trail. Acquisition This piece was placed in conjunction with the center's ARTSPARK which brings together art and nature. Partington worked alongside the City of Indianapolis to plan this work of art.
