This is a list of electricity-generating power stations in the U.S. state of South Carolina, sorted by type and name. In 2020, South Carolina had a total summer capacity of 24,122 MW through all of its power plants, and a net generation of 98,529 GWh. The corresponding electrical energy generation mix in 2021 was 53.8% nuclear, 23.3% natural gas, 15.2% coal, 4% hydroelectric, 2.3% biomass, 2.3% solar, and 0.1% petroleum. Petroleum coke, abbreviated coke or petcoke, is a final carbon-rich solid material that derives from oil refining, and is one type of the group of fuels referred to as cokes. Bad Creek Hydroelectric Station
The Bad Creek Hydroelectric Station is a pumped-storage hydroelectric power station located north of Salem in Oconee County, South Carolina. The power plant is owned by Duke Energy and its last generator was commissioned in 1991. The power station generates electricity by shifting water between an upper and lower reservoir. The upper Bad Creek Reservoir was created by damming Bad Creek and West Bad Creek while Lake Jocassee serves as the lower reservoir. During periods of low energy demand, the four Francis pump turbines pump water from Lake Jocassee which lies at an elevation of to the Bad Creek Reservoir at an elevation of through a tunnel. When energy demand is high, water is released back from Bad Creek Reservoir back down to the pump turbines which then operate as generators. Pinopolis Dam
Pinopolis Dam is a dam in Berkeley County, South Carolina. The earthen and concrete dam was completed in 1941 by Santee Cooper, the state-owned electric and water utility also known as South Carolina Public Service Authority. The dam is 138 feet high and 11,500 feet long at its crest. Broadly speaking, the dam impounds the Cooper River and creates Lake Moultrie. Specifically Lake Moultrie is fed directly from Lake Marion by a diversion canal built concurrently with the dam. This artificial rerouting of the Cooper River basin has effectively unified the Santee and Cooper River systems into a single hydrological drainage entity. Hartwell Dam
Hartwell Dam is a concrete and embankment dam located on the Savannah River at the border of South Carolina and Georgia, creating Lake Hartwell.
