Perfume (, ; french: parfum) is a mixture of fragrant essential oils or aroma compounds (fragrances), fixatives and solvents, usually in liquid form, used to give the human body, animals, food, objects, and living-spaces an agreeable scent. The 1939 Nobel Laureate for Chemistry, Leopold Ružička stated in 1945 that "right from the earliest days of scientific chemistry up to the present time, perfumes have substantially contributed to the development of organic chemistry as regards methods, systematic classification, and theory." Penhaligon's
Penhaligon's is a British perfume house. It was founded in the late 1860s by William Henry Penhaligon, a Cornish barber who moved to London and who became Court Barber and Perfumer to Queen Victoria. History Penhaligon's started life as a barber within the London and Provincial Turkish Baths, 76 Jermyn Street, an important homosocial space in the 'inner sanctum of the masculine city'. As was typical of barbers at the time, Penhaligon created his own products to sell to his clients, many of whom were politicians of the age. The first standalone shop was situated in Jermyn Street next to the street's Turkish bath, where William Penhaligon had been a barber. The second shop opened at 33 St James' Street, and was attached to the Jermyn Street store at the rear. In the late 1920s, the business moved to Bury Street. Robert Bienaimé (15 March 1876 – 12 October 1960) was a French perfumer, notable for his work at Houbigant. Bienaimé was born in the 8th arrondissement of Paris and became a perfumer early in life. About 1910, he joined Houbigant, then under the control of Paul Parquet Paul Parquet (1856–1916) was a French perfumer and joint owner of Houbigant. Ernest Daltroff
Ernest Daltroff (17 November 1867 – 3 February 1941), was a French perfumer and the founder of Parfums Caron in 1904. Biography Ernest Léon René Lucien Daltroff was born to an upper middle class family originally from Russia. His mother Ida-Caroline Bing used to put a drop of her perfume behind her son's ears before bed as a child. In his youth Ernest Daltroff travelled and then worked in the clothing industry. In 1900, he visited the Exposition Universelle (1900), Exposition Universelle. Shortly after, as he memorised the captivating scents of flowers, fruits and spices and developed an exceptional olfactory memory, without any formal training, he chose to embark on the profession of perfumer. In 1903, with his brother Raoul, he established a workshop in Asnières-sur-Seine in the former perfumery "Emilia", 12 avenue de la Lauzière. Parfums Caron
Parfums Caron is a French perfume house founded in 1904 by Ernest Daltroff. Over the course of the years, many Caron Perfumes were created. As of 2019, the brand is owned by Luxembourg-based Cattleya. Foundation Caron was founded in 1904 by Ernest Daltroff (1867-1941) who chose a short name, easy to remember in several languages while still being associated with France. The house was first located at 10 rue de la Paix in Paris. In 1906, Daltroff met Félicie Wanpouille (1874-1967), a young milliner who also worked on rue de la Paix, she introduced him to her clients, and soon became his business partner and muse. He created the perfumes, she created the bottles. François Coty (born Joseph Marie François Spoturno in Corsica ; 3 May 1874 – 25 July 1934) was a French perfumer, businessman, newspaper publisher, politician and patron of the arts. He was the founder of the Coty perfume company, today a multinational. He is considered the founding father of the modern perfume industry. In 1904, his first success, fragrance ''La Rose Jacqueminot'' launched his career. He soon started exporting perfumes from France, and by 1910 he had subsidiaries in Moscow, London and New York. Jacques Guerlain
Jacques Edouard Guerlain (; 7 October 1874 – 2 May 1963) was a French perfumer, the third and most famous of the Guerlain family. One of the most prolific and influential perfumers of the 20th century, over eighty of Guerlain's perfumes remain known, though certain estimates suggest he composed some four hundred. Among his greatest fragrances are ''L’Heure Bleue'' (1912), ''Mitsouko'' (1919) and ''Shalimar (perfume), Shalimar'' (1925). Though his work earned him universal renown, a considerable fortune and honours such as that of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, Guerlain avoided public attention, never once granting an interview.
