List Of People Executed In Ohio
The following is a list of people executed by the U.S. state of Ohio since 1999. All of the following people have been executed for murder since the ''Gregg v. Georgia'' decision. All 56 were executed by lethal injection. However, any future execution will no longer be performed using this method, due to a ruling by Governor Mike DeWine in December 2020. Notable persons executed in Ohio before the ''Gregg'' decision include Anna Marie Hahn. Christopher Newton (criminal)
Christopher J. Newton (November 13, 1969 – May 24, 2007) was an American murderer executed in the state of Ohio in 2007. Christopher Newton received the death penalty for the 2001 aggravated murder of his cellmate, Jason Brewer. At the time of the murder, Newton was imprisoned for attempted aggravated burglary of his father's home, an offense he committed a few weeks after his release from prison for a prior attempted aggravated burglary. Newton killed Brewer in their cell by stomping on his neck and head and strangling him with a strip of cloth. According to the opinion of the Ohio Supreme Court affirming the death penalty, Newton laughed while responding officials tried to resuscitate Brewer, having smeared Brewer's blood on his face and drunk some of it (stating, "if he is not dead, I hope he is going to be a vegetable"). Ted Strickland
Theodore Strickland (born August 4, 1941) is an American politician who was the 68th governor of Ohio, serving from 2007 to 2011. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served in the United States House of Representatives, representing (1993–1995, 1997–2007). Jeffrey Lundgren
Jeffrey Don Lundgren (May 3, 1950 – October 24, 2006) was an American self-proclaimed prophet, cult leader, and mass murderer who, on April 17, 1989, killed a family of five in Kirtland, Ohio. Lundgren led a Latter Day Saint movement-based cult and interpreted scripture using an unconventional method that he described as "chiastic", which involved searching text for recurring patterns. He and several of his followers murdered the Avery family, fellow members of his cult, for which he was convicted and sentenced to death. Lundgren was executed in 2006. Rocky Barton
Rocky Lee Barton (July 28, 1956 – July 12, 2006) was executed by the State of Ohio on July 12, 2006, for the murder of his wife, 43-year-old Kimbirli Jo Barton, at their home in Waynesville, Ohio. Convicted on October 10, 2003, Barton spent almost three years on death row. Kimbirli and Barton had gotten in a domestic dispute the morning of January 16, 2003, and she was returning home to gather her belongings in order to move out, when Barton ambushed her by making sure the gate to the driveway was locked behind her. Barton then appeared and shot Kimbirli once in the shoulder, then in the back with a shotgun. Barton's uncle and 17-year-old daughter witnessed the shooting. Joseph Lewis Clark
Joseph Lewis Clark (January 15, 1949 – May 2, 2006) was an American murderer executed by the State of Ohio. He was the 21st person executed by Ohio since the state resumed executions in 1999. Clark was sentenced to death on November 28, 1984, for the murder of 22-year-old David Manning during a gas station hold-up in Toledo, though he also confessed to the separate murder of a convenience store employee. Glenn Lee Benner II
Glenn Lee Benner II (September 24, 1962 – February 7, 2006) was a convicted murderer, executed by the State of Ohio. Murders On August 6, 1985, Benner abducted 26-year-old Cynthia Sedgwick in the woods surrounding the Blossom Music Center in Summit County, where they both attended a concert. Benner raped Sedgwick and choked her to death. On January 2, 1986, Benner kidnapped an acquaintance, 21-year-old Trina Bowser, in Akron and raped and killed her. John R. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 - February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC. He was also a notable record producer and artist manager. William James "Flip" Williams Jr. (November 9, 1956 – October 25, 2005) was an American mass murderer and suspected serial killer who was executed by lethal injection. Herman Ashworth
Herman Dale Ashworth (February 26, 1973 – September 27, 2005) was an American murderer who was executed by the U.S. state of Ohio. He admitted to committing aggravated murder and aggravated robbery in the death of Daniel L. Baker on September 10, 1996. Ashworth was executed by lethal injection at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility after spending 8 years, three months, and 11 days on death row. William Smith (murderer)
William Henry Smith (October 28, 1957 – March 8, 2005) was executed by the state of Ohio for the rape and murder of 47-year-old Mary Virginia Bradford of Cincinnati, Ohio, that occurred on September 26, 1987. Smith and Bradford were seen speaking and dancing together at a local bar where they were both frequent regulars. They both left the bar at different times on the night of September 26.
