The List of painters in the Art Institute of Chicago is a list of the artists indexed in the Art Institute of Chicago website whose works in their collection were painted. The museum's collections are spread throughout eight buildings in Chicago, and not all works are on display. The entire collection houses over 300,000 objects, thousands of which are on view at any given time, and only 2,382 of these are paintings. In the following list, the painter's name is followed by the number of their paintings in the collection, with a link to all of their works available on the Artic website. For artists with more than one type of work in the collection, or for works by artists not listed here, see the Artic website or the corresponding Wikimedia Commons category. The Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago's Grant Park, founded in 1879, is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the world. Benny Andrews
Benny Andrews (November 13, 1930 – November 10, 2006) was an African-American artist, activist and educator. Born in Plainview, Georgia, Andrews earned a BFA in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1958, and soon after moved to New York. He is known for his expressive, figurative paintings that often incorporated collaged fabric and other material. Andrews helped found the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition, which agitated for greater representation of African-American artists and curators in New York’s major art museums in the late 1960s and 70s. He also led the group in founding an arts education program in prisons and detention centers. Andrews taught art at Queens College for three decades, and from 1982 to 1984, served as the Director of the Visual Arts Program for the National Endowment for the Arts. John Woodhouse Audubon
John Woodhouse Audubon (November 30, 1812, Henderson, Kentucky – February 21, 1862, New York City) was the second son of the famed ornithologist and painter, John James Audubon. Like his father, he was primarily a painter of wildlife, but also did some portraits and genre scenes of the westward migration. Biography He grew up in Kentucky, Ohio and Louisiana, where he attended a school taught by his mother, Lucy. William Artaud
William Artaud (1763–1823) was an English painter of portraits and biblical subjects. Life Artaud was the son of a London jeweller. He was awarded a premium at the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce, Society of Arts in 1776, and first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1780. He was a student at the Royal Academy Schools, winning a silver medal in 1783, the gold medal, (for a subject from ''Paradise Lost'') in 1786, and the travelling studentship nine years later. He painted both portraits and biblical subjects. His sitters included Francesco Bartolozzi, Samuel Parr (now in the collection of the Warwickshire Museum Service) Joseph Priestley, William Herschel and other leading figures of the day. David Aronson
David Aronson (October 28, 1923 – July 2, 2015) was a painter and Professor of Art at Boston University. Biography Aronson was born in Šiluva, Lithuania in 1923. He taught at Boston University from 1955 to his death in 2015, where he formed the Fine Art Department. As an artist, he exhibited in Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Paris, Rome, Berlin and Copenhagen, among others. His work is represented in over forty museums. Aronson's work is associated with the school of Boston Expressionism. Ralph Arnold
Ralph Arnold (December 5, 1928 – May 10, 2006) was an American artist and educator from Chicago, Illinois. Education and military service Arnold briefly attended University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before enlisting in U.S. Army and serving in Korea from 1950 to 1952. Returning to Chicago, Arnold met William Frederick, a silversmith teacher at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Arnold and Frederick became partners, and would remain together until Arnold's death more than fifty years later. Frederick encouraged Arnold to experiment with various artistic mediums in classes at the Art Institute. Arnold subsequently completed an undergraduate degree in 1955 at Roosevelt University; in 1976 he earned an M.F.A. from the Art Institute of Chicago. François Arnal (2 October 1924 – 28 October 2012) was a French painter and sculptor. Emil Armin (1 April 1883 – 2 July 1971) was an American artist known for his use of vibrant color and brushwork. From the 1920s through his death in 1971, Armin maintained a high profile in Chicago's artistic community. Richard Joseph Anuszkiewicz (; May 23, 1930 – May 19, 2020) was an American painting, painter, printmaking, printmaker, and sculpture, sculptor.
