Old-time Radio
The Golden Age of Radio, also known as the old-time radio (OTR) era, was an era of radio in the United States where it was the dominant electronic home entertainment medium. It began with the birth of commercial radio broadcasting in the early 1920s and lasted through the 1950s, when television gradually superseded radio as the medium of choice for scripted programming, variety and dramatic shows. Radio was the first broadcast medium, and during this period people regularly tuned in to their favorite radio programs, and families gathered to listen to the home radio in the evening. According to a 1947 C. E. Hooper survey, 82 out of 100 Americans were found to be radio listeners. ''Acousticon Hour'' was a "musicale" radio program aired during 1927 and 1928 on NBC. It offered selections from classical music, orchestral favorites, operas and operettas. History The show was sponsored by the company that marketed the Acousticon brand hearing aid, invented by Miller Reese Hutchison. ''The Adventures of Ellery Queen'' is a radio detective program in the United States. Several iterations of the program appeared on different networks, with the first one broadcast on CBS June 18, 1939, and the last on ABC May 27, 1948. ''The Adventures of Ellery Queen'' grew out of the combined efforts of producer-director George Zachary and writers Frederic Dannay and Manfred Lee. Dannay and Lee, who were cousins, originated the Ellery Queen character. Initially they wrote the program's scripts, and Zachary handled production. Beginning in 1945, Anthony Boucher replaced Dannay and worked with Lee writing scripts. ''The Adventures of Dick Cole'' was a 1940s comic book series, created by Bob Davis. It was published by Novelty Press, and later, Star Publications. Dick Cole is a heroic cadet at the fictional Farr Military Academy. The character was introduced in the "Origin of Dick Cole," in the first issue of Novelty Press' ''Blue Bolt Comics'' (cover-dated June 1940). Publication history Billed as "America's Number One School Star", Dick Cole starred in a backup feature in Novelty Press' ''Blue Bolt'' (and later ''4 Most''), with regular stories about the young hero appearing until 1949. Charlie Chan
Charlie Chan is a fictional Honolulu police detective created by author Earl Derr Biggers for a series of mystery novels. Biggers loosely based Chan on Hawaiian detective Chang Apana. The benevolent and heroic Chan was conceived as an alternative to Yellow Peril stereotypes and villains like Fu Manchu. Many stories feature Chan traveling the world beyond Hawaii as he investigates mysteries and solves crimes. Chan first appeared in Biggers' novels and then was featured in a number of media. Over four dozen films featuring Charlie Chan were made, beginning in 1926. The character, featured only as a supporting character, was first portrayed by East Asian actors, and the films met with little success. ''The Adventures of Champion'' is an American adventure serial radio drama directed by William Burch about screen cowboy Gene Autry's horse Champion. Each 15-minute episode was broadcast weekday afternoons on the Mutual Broadcasting System in 1949 and 1950. (Another source says that the program ran "June to November 1949.") The Western mystery tales focused on 12-year-old Ricky West, who is raised in the wilderness by his adoptive Uncle Smoky, and his German Shepherd named Rebel. Champion was depicted as a wild horse who let only Ricky ride him. While the series covered gold mines, rustlers, and Indian problems, the primary focus was on the faith and loyalty between a boy, a dog, and a horse. ''The Adventures of Bill Lance'' is a 30-minute radio crime drama, created by J. Donald Wilson, which aired on two networks in two runs between 1944 and 1948. Initially heard on CBS West Coast Sundays at 9 p.m., the series began April 23, 1944, with John McIntire as Bill Lance, a detective who traveled to exotic locales. Pat McGeehan took over the role the following March until the series ended September 9, 1945. Howard McNear played Lance's pal, Ulysses Higgins. Others in the cast included Mercedes McCambridge, Cathy Lewis, Joseph Kearns and Frank Graham. The announcers were Dick Joy and Owen James. Milton Charles supplied the music. ''Adventures by Morse'' is a Broadcast syndication, syndicated adventure series produced, written and directed by Carlton E. MorseTerrace, Vincent (1999).
