List Of Mosquito Genera
There are 112 genera of mosquitoes, containing approximately 3,500 species.Elbers ARW, Koenraadt CJM, and Meiswinkel R (2015) Mosquitoes and Culicoides biting midges: vector range and the influence of climate change. Rev Sci Tech 34: 123–137 Human malaria is transmitted only by females of the genus ''Anopheles''. Of the approximately 430 ''Anopheles'' species, while over 100 are known to be able to transmit malaria to humans, only 30–40 commonly do so in nature. Mosquitoes in other genera can transmit different diseases, such as yellow fever and dengue for species in the genus ''Aedes''. The genus ''Aedes'' has over 950 species. Since breeding and biting habit differ considerably between species, species identification is important for control programmes. Malaria
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that affects humans and other animals. Malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, tiredness, vomiting, and headaches. In severe cases, it can cause jaundice, seizures, coma, or death. Symptoms usually begin ten to fifteen days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. If not properly treated, people may have recurrences of the disease months later. In those who have recently survived an infection, reinfection usually causes milder symptoms. This partial resistance disappears over months to years if the person has no continuing exposure to malaria. Malaria is caused by single-celled microorganisms of the ''Plasmodium'' group. It is spread exclusively through bites of infected ''Anopheles'' mosquitoes. The mosquito bite introduces the parasites from the mosquito's saliva into a person's blood. The parasites travel to the liver where they mature and reproduce. Five species of ''Plasmodium'' can infect and be spread by h ...

Stethomyia
''Stethomyia'' is a subgenus of the mosquito genus ''Anopheles''. The type species is '' Anopheles nimbus''. There are five species in this subgenus. History This genus was created by Frederick Wallace Edwards in 1932. Phylogeny Of the seven extant subgenera of ''Anopheles'', ''Stethomyia'' appears to be the earliest diverging clade. This branching order is currently under examination and may be revised. Distribution This subgenus is found in the Caribbean and both Central and South America. Countries where species of this subgenus are found include: Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. The species in this subgenus are forest mosquitoes and to date have been poorly studied. Larvae and pupal forms have been found in shaded marshy and swampy areas along streams within forests. Adult females are known to feed on humans. Description Eggs: Larvae: * Widely separated seta 2-C * The long pleural s ...

Tribe (biology)
In biology, a tribe is a taxonomic rank above genus, but below family and subfamily. It is sometimes subdivided into subtribes. By convention, all taxonomic ranks from genus upwards are capitalized, including both tribe and subtribe. In zoology, the standard ending for the name of a zoological tribe is "-ini". Examples include the tribes Caprini (goat-antelopes), Hominini (hominins), Bombini (bumblebees), and Thunnini (tunas). The tribe Hominini is divided into subtribes by some scientists; subtribe Hominina then comprises "humans". The standard ending for the name of a zoological subtribe is "-ina". In botany, the standard ending for the name of a botanical tribe is "-eae". Examples include the tribes Acalypheae and Hyacintheae. The tribe Hyacintheae is divided into subtribes, including the subtribe Massoniinae. The standard ending for the name of a botanical subtribe is "-inae". In bacteriology, the form of tribe names is as in botany, e.g., Pseudomonadeae, based on the ge ...

Culicinae
The Culicinae are the most extensive subfamily of mosquitoes (Culicidae) and have species in every continent except Antarctica, but are highly concentrated in tropical areas. Mosquitoes are best known as parasites to many vertebrate animals and vectors for disease. They are holometabolous insects, and most species lay their eggs in stagnant water, to benefit their aquatic larval stage. Introduction The subfamily Culicinae is the largest subfamily of Culicidae, a family of Nematocera dipterans. There are 3,046 species of Culicinae mosquitoes, in 108 genera and 11 tribes. Members of the Culicinae subfamily are small flies with fore wings for flight and hind wings reduced to halteres for balance. The mosquitoes also have long, slender, legs and proboscis-style mouth parts for feeding on vertebrate blood or plant fluids. Only the females are blood feeders, requiring a high quality protein meal before they can oviposit. Because the mosquitoes are well adapted for finding hosts, the f ...

Chagasia
''Chagasia'' is one of the three mosquito genera in the subfamily Anophelinae. The other two genera are ''Anopheles'' Meigen (nearly worldwide distribution) and '' Bironella'' Theobald (Australia only). The subfamily consists of five species in the Neotropical region. These include ''C. ablusa'' Harbach, ''C. bathana'' Dyar, ''C. bonneae'' Root, ''C. fajardi'' Lutz and ''C. rozeboomi'' Causey, Deane & Deane. '' Bironella'' appears to be the sister taxon to ''Anopheles'', with ''Chagasia'' forming the outgroup in this subfamily. The species ''Chagasia bathana'' has 8 chromosomes and males are heterogametic with one long X chromosome and one short Y chromosome. Harbach, R. E., & Howard, T. M. (2009). Review of the genus ''Chagasia'' (Diptera: Culicidae: Anophelinae). ''Zootaxa'', (2210), 1-25. See also * List of mosquito genera * Taxonomy of Anopheles ''Anopheles'' is a genus of mosquitoes (Culicidae). Of about 484 recognised species, over 100 can transmit human malaria, but ...
