A Member of the European Parliament (MEP) is a person who has been elected to serve as a popular representative in the European Parliament. When the European Parliament (then known as the Common Assembly of the ECSC) first met in 1952, its members were directly appointed by the governments of member states from among those already sitting in their own national parliaments. Since 1979, however, MEPs have been elected by direct universal suffrage. Earlier European organizations that were a precursor to the European Union did not have MEPs. Each member state establishes its own method for electing MEPs – and in some states this has changed over time – but the system chosen must be a form of proportional representation. Some member states elect their MEPs to represent a single national constituency; other states apportion seats to sub-national regions for election. They are sometimes referred to as delegates. Jim Fitzsimons
James Fitzsimons (born 16 December 1936) is a former Irish Fianna Fáil politician. A publican from Navan, County Meath, he was educated at St Patrick's Classical School in Navan. Fitzsimons was elected to the 21st Dáil as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Meath constituency on his first attempt at the 1977 general election, and re-elected until retiring at the 1987 general election to concentrate on his European Parliament seat. He was succeeded in the Dáil by Noel Dempsey. He was appointed as Minister of State at the Department of Industry and Energy on 28 October 1982 by the short-lived 1982 Haughey Government in a reshuffle. The Dáil was dissolved on 4 November after the government lost a vote of confidence. Seán Ó Neachtain (politician)
Seán Ó Neachtain (born 22 May 1947) is a former Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He was a Member of the European Parliament for the North-West constituency from 2002, when he was substituted for Pat "the Cope" Gallagher, until 2009. He was a member of the Transport and Tourism Committee, as well as the Fisheries Committee. Ó Neachtain was instrumental to the recognition of the Irish language as an official working language of the European Union. After obtaining a BA (hons) in 1969, Ó Neachtain became a school teacher. He worked in this capacity through the 1970s and 1980s. He was involved in regional politics around Galway and western Ireland from 1979, and served as a member of Galway County Council from 1991 to 2002. He made his first foray into European politics when he was appointed as a member of the Committee of the Regions in 1994. 2002 Irish General Election
The 2002 Irish general election to the 29th Dáil was held on Friday, 17 May, just over three weeks after the dissolution of the 28th Dáil on Thursday, 25 April by President Mary McAleese, at the request of the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern. The general election took place in 42 Dáil constituencies throughout Ireland for 166 seats in Dáil Éireann, the house of representatives of the Oireachtas, with a revision of constituencies since the last election under the Electoral (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1998. Dáil Éireann ( , ; ) is the lower house, and principal chamber, of the Oireachtas (Irish legislature), which also includes the President of Ireland and Seanad Éireann (the upper house).Article 15.1.2º of the Constitution of Ireland reads: "The Oireachtas shall consist of the President and two Houses, viz.: a House of Representatives to be called Dáil Éireann and a Senate to be called Seanad Éireann." Dana Rosemary Scallon
Dana Rosemary Scallon (born Rosemary Brown; 30 August 1951), known professionally as Dana, is an Irish singer and former politician who served as Member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2004. While still a schoolgirl she won the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest with "All Kinds of Everything". It became a worldwide million-seller and launched her music career. She entered politics in 1997, as Dana Rosemary Scallon, running unsuccessfully in the Irish presidential election, but later being elected as an MEP for Connacht–Ulster in 1999. Scallon was again an independent candidate in the Irish 2011 presidential election, but was eliminated on the first count. Patricia McKenna
Patricia McKenna (born 13 March 1957) is an Irish Independent and former Green Party politician. She served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Dublin constituency from 1994 to 2004. She is a practising barrister having been called to the Bar in 2016. Background A native of Castleshane, a small village in County Monaghan. McKenna was formerly a member of the Green Party. She became the first Green Party candidate in Ireland to be elected to the European Parliament. Joe McCartin
John Joseph McCartin (born 24 April 1939) is a former Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Connacht–Ulster constituency from 1979 to 2004. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Sligo–Leitrim constituency from 1981 to 1982 and 1982 to 1987. He also served as a Senator for the Agricultural Panel from 1973 to 1981. Early life He was born at Aughnasheelan, Ballinamore, County Leitrim, the son of small farmer Francis McCartin and his wife Annie Kate Lohan. He was educated at Drumbibe National School, Aughnasheelan and St. Patrick's College, Cavan. In 1972, he married Ann Clarke; they have two sons.
