Kalamazoo ( ) is a city in the southwest region of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Kalamazoo County. At the 2010 census, Kalamazoo had a population of 74,262. Kalamazoo is the major city of the Kalamazoo-Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 335,340 in 2015. Kalamazoo is equidistant from Chicago and Detroit, being about 140 miles (225 kilometers) away from both. One of Kalamazoo's most notable features is the Kalamazoo Mall, an outdoor pedestrian shopping mall. The city created the mall in 1959 by closing part of Burdick Street to auto traffic, although two of the mall's four blocks have been reopened to auto traffic since 1999. Allen Potter
Allen Potter (October 2, 1818 – May 8, 1885) was a politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. Potter was born in Galloway (now Galway, New York) and attended the common schools. He moved to Adrian, Michigan, in 1830 and to Jonesville, Michigan, in 1838 where he learned the trade of tinsmith. He moved to Kalamazoo in 1845 and engaged in the retail hardware business until 1858, when he engaged in banking and in the manufacture of gas. Potter was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives in 1857. He also served as president of the village council in 1859, 1863, 1870, and again in 1872. He was elected a member of the board of education in 1867, 1869, and 1871, serving as president in 1869. He was also a member of the board of water commissioners in 1872 and an unsuccessful Liberal Republican candidate for election to the 43rd United States Congress that same year. Robert Jones (Michigan Politician)
Robert B. Jones (April 22, 1944 – October 17, 2010) was an American politician from the state of Michigan. He served four consecutive terms as the Mayor of Kalamazoo from 1997 to 2005. A Democrat, he was elected to the Michigan State House of Representatives in 2006 and 2008, representing the 60th District in Kalamazoo County, which includes the City of Kalamazoo, Cooper Township and part of Kalamazoo Township. He was the Democratic nominee for the Michigan Senate's 20th district in the November 2, 2010 election, until his death just 16 days before. Early life Jones was born in Jeffersonville, Georgia on April 22, 1944. He attended public schools in Brooklyn and graduated from John Jay High School in 1962. Hannah McKinney
Hannah McKinney is the former vice-mayor and mayor of Kalamazoo, Michigan. She was elected mayor on November 8, 2005, after previously serving since 1997 as the vice-mayor under the late Robert Jones. McKinney was mayor at the time that the Kalamazoo Promise was announced, and was also mayor when Kalamazoo's Intermodal Center was dedicated. The current mayor, Bobby J. Hopewell, was elected November 13, 2007, edging McKinney by just 54 votes. She automatically became vice mayor. McKinney served eight terms on the Kalamazoo City Commission before deciding not to run again in 2011. She served as a city planning commissioner prior to her election to the city commission.
