Cimarron (1931 Film)
''Cimarron'' is a 1931 pre-Code epic Western film directed by Wesley Ruggles, starring Richard Dix and Irene Dunne, and featuring Estelle Taylor and Roscoe Ates. The Oscar- winning script was written by Howard Estabrook based on the 1930 Edna Ferber novel '' Cimarron''. It would be RKO's most expensive production up to that date, and its winning of the top Oscar for Outstanding Production would be one of only two for Outstanding Production ever won by that studio. It is also the first of only three Westerns to ever win the top honor at the Academy Awards (the others being ''Dances with Wolves'' in 1990 and ''Unforgiven'' in 1992). Henry King (January 24, 1886June 29, 1982) was an American actor and film director. Widely considered one of the finest and most successful filmmakers of his era, King was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Director, and directed seven films nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Biography Before coming to film, King worked as an actor in various repertoire theatres and first started to take small film roles in 1912. Between 1913 and 1925, he appeared as an actor in approximately sixty films. He directed for the first time in 1915 and grew to become one of the most commercially successful Hollywood directors of the 1920s and '30s. He was twice nominated for the Best Director Oscar. ''Ramona'' is a 1936 American Drama Western film directed by Henry King, based on Helen Hunt Jackson's 1884 novel ''Ramona''. This was the third adaptation of the film, and the first one with sound. It was the fourth American feature film using the new three strip Technicolor process. It starred Loretta Young and Don Ameche. The ''New York Times'' praised its use of new Technicolor technology but found the plot "a piece of unadulterated hokum." ''Princess Tam Tam'' is a 1935 French black-and-white film which stars Josephine Baker as a local Tunisian girl who is educated and then introduced to Parisian high society. Baker sings two songs, "Dream Ship" and "Neath the Tropical Blue Skies", in the film, and dances a number of times. Plot Frustrated writer Max de Mirecourt ( Albert Prejean) goes to Tunisia in search of inspiration for his next novel. The Chinese Civil War was fought between the Kuomintang-led government of the Republic of China and forces of the Chinese Communist Party, continuing intermittently since 1 August 1927 until 7 December 1949 with a Communist victory on mainland China. Michał Waszyński (29 September 1904 – 20 February 1965) was first a film director in Poland, then in Italy, and later (as Michael Waszynski) a film producer, producer of major United States, American films, mainly in Spain. Known for his elegance and impeccable manners, he was known by his acquaintances as "the prince". Waszyński was born as Mosze Waks into a Polish Jewish family in 1904 in Kowel, a small town in Volhynian Governorate, Volhynia (now in Ukraine), which at the time was part of Imperial Russia. As German Empire, Germany occupied this part of Europe during World War I, he moved first to Warsaw and later to Berlin. Plot Stefan, a Polish sailor, gets into a bar fight on the exotic island of Tahiti. The injured Pole is attended to by Moana, a young Tahitian woman. When the time comes to leave, Stefan, driven by greed, steals the "sacred pearls" from a local cave. On returning to Poland, he sets up his own successful business.
