List Of Former State Routes In New York
The modern New York (state), New York state route system was created in 1924 and initially consisted of roughly two dozen routes. As the system has been expanded and refined in the years since, hundreds of routes have been eliminated for several reasons. These reasons range from eliminating numerical duplication with a U.S. Highway or an Interstate Highway in New York to the removal of the highway from the state highway system. Many of the designations listed in the lists below have been reused for unrelated highways located elsewhere in New York. US 4 (NY)
U.S. Route 4 (US 4) is a part of the U.S. Highway System that runs from East Greenbush, New York, to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In the U.S. state of New York, US 4 extends from an intersection with US 9 and US 20 in East Greenbush to the Vermont state line northeast of Whitehall. While the remainder of US 4 east of New York is an east–west route, US 4 in New York is signed north–south due to the alignment the route takes through the state. The portion of the route between Waterford and Whitehall is part of the Lakes to Locks Passage, an All-American Road. The route runs along the Hudson River from Troy to Hudson Falls and the Champlain Canal from Fort Ann to Whitehall. It passes through several riverside and canalside communities, including two cities (Troy and Mechanicville) and seven villages. New York State Route 3 (NY 3) is a major east–west state highway in New York, in the United States, that connects central New York to the North Country region near the Canada–US border via Adirondack Park. The route extends for between its western terminus at an intersection with NY 104A in the Cayuga County town of Sterling and its eastern terminus at a junction with U.S. Route 9 (US 9) in the Clinton County city of Plattsburgh. NY 3 traverses eight counties and is a lakeside roadway from Mexico to Sackets Harbor, a mountainous route in Adirondack Park, and an urban arterial in Fulton, Watertown, and Plattsburgh. New York State Route 180 (NY 180) is a north–south state highway in the northwestern part of Jefferson County in the U.S. state of New York. The southern terminus of the route is at NY 3 in the Hounsfield hamlet of Baggs Corner, located west of downtown Watertown. The northern terminus is at NY 12 in the Orleans hamlet of Fishers Landing. NY 180 is part of the Seaway Trail from its southern terminus at Baggs Corner to its junction with NY 12E at the Brownville hamlet of Limerick. NY 351
New York State Route 351 (NY 351) is a north–south state highway in central Rensselaer County, New York, in the United States. It extends for from an intersection with NY 43 in the Sand Lake hamlet of West Sand Lake to a junction with NY 2 in the Brunswick hamlet of Cropseyville. The portion of NY 351 north of the hamlet of Poestenkill was originally designated as New York State Route 153 in the 1930s. This designation was removed in the 1940s, and the West Sand Lake–Cropseyville roadway became County Route 77 (CR 77) sometime afterward. On April 1, 1980, all of CR 77 was transferred to the state of New York, at which time it was redesignated as NY 351 by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). It runs north–south from an intersection with NY 70 near the hamlet of Dalton in the town of Nunda to a junction with NY 63 in the town of Groveland near NY 408's exit with Interstate 390 (I-390). Most of NY 408 is a two-lane rural highway that passes through lightly developed areas; however, the last two miles (3 km) of the highway, where it runs in a due east–west direction, are heavily trafficked as NY 408 becomes a key connector road in both directions. The origins of NY 408 date back to the early 20th century when the portion of the route north of the village of Nunda became part of two unsigned legislative routes. NY 192
New York State Route 192 (NY 192) was a long east–west state highway in Franklin County, New York, in the United States. The western terminus of the route was at an intersection with NY 30 in the hamlet of Paul Smiths within the town of Brighton. Its eastern terminus was at a junction with NY 86 near the Adirondack Regional Airport in the town of Harrietstown. In between, NY 192 served the hamlet of Gabriels. NY 192 was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York to an alignment extending from Paul Smiths to Bloomingdale. A suffixed route of NY 192, NY 192A, was assigned in the 1950s to provide a signed connection between NY 192 near Gabriels and then-NY 86 in Harrietstown. NY 160
New York State Route 160 (NY 160) is a north–south state highway mostly located within Schenectady County, New York, in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 159 in the Duanesburg hamlet of Mariaville Lake. Its northern terminus is at a junction with NY 5S in the Rotterdam hamlet of Pattersonville. While its termini are both in Schenectady County, it briefly passes into Montgomery County near its midpoint. Originally, NY 160 was little more than a loop route connecting NY 5S in Florida and Rotterdam to then-New York State Route 407 in Scotch Church when it was assigned in 1930. New York State Route 159 (NY 159) is a east–west state highway in New York, running from the town of Duanesburg through Mariaville Lake to the hamlet of Rotterdam, just outside the city of Schenectady. A two-lane highway for all of its length, it is entirely located in Schenectady County.
