Association Football
Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players who primarily use their feet to propel the ball around a rectangular field called a pitch. The objective of the game is to score more goals than the opposition by moving the ball beyond the goal line into a rectangular framed goal defended by the opposing side. New Najaf Stadium
Al-Najaf International Stadium ( ar, ملعب النجف الدولي) is a newly built stadium in Najaf, Iraq, which was opened on 5 May 2018. It is used mostly for football matches and serves as the home stadium of Al-Najaf FC and Naft Al-Wasat SC. The stadium has a capacity of 30,000 spectators and the construction was at an overall cost of $83.75 million funded entirely by Iraqi government. Design The final design by Kansas City-based 360 Architecture has won the competition and was selected by Iraqi Ministry of Youth and Sports. The first proposed design was to include an athletics track but it was agreed to remove it in order to achieve a football specific stadium. The sports complex also contains two additional stadiums with 400 and 2000 spectators respectively, mainly used for training. Maysan Stadium
Maysan Stadium ( ar, ملعب ميسان الأولمبي) is a multi-use stadium in Amarah, Iraq. The stadium holds 25,000 people and was opened in 1987. Renovation Plans were made to renovate the stadium after 2003, but work began only in 2011. The project included rehabilitating the VIP area, the pitch, installing 25,000 seats, a new running track, a roof over the entire stadium and other facilities within the stadium compound. Renovation work soon stopped due to lack of money. Work restarted in 2016, and the stadium was officially re-opened on 22 July 2017, although the roof has not yet been completed. Tenant Naft Maysan will most likely play most of their home games at this stadium. Kirkuk participated in the Iraqi Premier League for the first time in 1983–84, but was relegated for several seasons to the lower divisions, before returning to the top-flight seasons later. Kirkuk ( ar, كركوك, ku, کەرکووک, translit=Kerkûk, , tr, Kerkük) is a city in Iraq, serving as the capital of the Kirkuk Governorate, located north of Baghdad. The city is home to a diverse population of Turkmens, Arabs, Kurds, and Assyrians. Kirkuk sits on the ruins of the original Kirkuk Citadel which sits near the Khasa River. Kirkuk was proclaimed the "capital of Iraqi culture" in 2010. It is claimed by the Kurdistan Regional Government as its capital. Kirkuk is also considered by Iraqi Turkmens to be their cultural and historical capital. Erbil, also called Hawler (, ar, أربيل, Arbīl; syr, ܐܲܪܒܹܝܠ, Arbel), is the capital and most populated city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It lies in the Erbil Governorate. Franso Hariri Stadium ( Kurdish: یاریگای فرانسۆ ھەریری, Yarîgay Franso Herîrî; Arabic: ملعب فرانسوا حريري) is a multi-purpose stadium in Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq. Al-Minaa Sports Club ( ar, نادي الميناء الرياضي, lit=Port Sports Club) is an Iraqi multi-sport club based in Al-Maqal, Basra that participates in the Iraq Division One, the second tier of Iraqi football. It is one of the most popular clubs in Iraq, particularly in the south, and became the first club outside Baghdad to win the Iraqi Premier League. Al-Minaa was founded on November 22, 1931, in Al-Maqal. In 1974, the club was merged with another team called Al-Bareed to form a single club called Al-Muwasalat, and it was a strange situation because the Al-Bareed team were based in Baghdad while Al-Minaa were based in Basra and the two teams met in Baghdad on the day of the match only, so after just one season the club was dissolved and Al-Minaa returned in their place.
