Dust Storm
A dust storm, also called a sandstorm, is a meteorological phenomenon common in arid and semi-arid regions. Dust storms arise when a gust front or other strong wind blows loose sand and dirt from a dry surface. Fine particles are transported by saltation and suspension, a process that moves soil from one place and deposits it in another. The arid regions of North Africa, the Arabian peninsula, Central Asia and China are the main terrestrial sources of airborne dust. It has been argued that poor management of Earth's drylands, such as neglecting the fallow system, are increasing the size and frequency of dust storms from desert margins and changing both the local and global climate, as well as impacting local economies. The term ''sandstorm'' is used most often in the context of desert dust storms, especially in the Sahara Desert, or places where sand is a more prevalent soil type than dirt or rock, when, in addition to fine particles obscuring visibility, a considerabl ...

Dust Storm Warning
A dust storm warning (SAME code: DSW) is issued by the National Weather Service in the United States when blowing dust is expected to frequently reduce visibility to or less, generally with winds of or more. Beginning November 1, 2018, the National Weather Service issued these dust storm warnings in a polygon- and storm-based format, similar to the format of severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings. The zone-based dust storm warning was replaced by the new blowing dust warning. In addition to the new dust storm warning format, a lesser-impact dust advisory will be issued by the National Weather Service if the criteria for a warning is not met and if travel impacts are still expected. Example The following is the first issuance of the new "storm-based" dust storm warnings, which is in use as of June 19, 2018. 2021 North China Sandstorm
The 2021 East Asia sandstorm was a meteorological phenomenon that began in the Eastern Gobi desert steppe on March 14, and subsequently spread to the entire Mongolian Plateau South, the Loess Plateau, the North China Plain and the Korean Peninsula. It was caused by strong northwest winds coming in from Mongolia, as a result of hot and dry conditions. Background Beijing and cities in the Mongolian Plateau regularly experience sandstorms in March and April, partially due to their proximity to the Gobi Desert. The issue has been compounded since the 1950s due to widespread deforestation and soil erosion. In particular, forests on the border with Mongolia were cut down, which previously provided protection against sand from the Gobi Desert. In 1978, China started the Three-North Shelter Forest Program to counteract the effects, in particular by planting new trees on 35 million hectares of land to trap incoming dust. Air corridors were also created to allow sand to pass more quic ...

2018 Indian Dust Storms
From 2 to 3 May 2018, high-velocity dust storms swept across parts of North India. 125 people died and over 200 were injured. In Uttar Pradesh, 43 died in the city of Agra and about 30 died elsewhere in the state. In neighboring Rajasthan, about 35 people died and over 200 were injured after winds downed more than 8,000 electricity poles and uprooted hundreds of trees. Storms are not uncommon in the region; however, because these storms occurred at night and with greater wind speeds than average, the death toll was higher than usual. Background Dust storms are a feature of India's seasonal weather patterns. The storms typically occur in the summer months, when the weather has been dry to allow dust to be picked up by passing winds. The death toll in such storms rarely exceeds 12; a previous storm hit India on 11 April 2018, killing 19 people Dust Storm and its Damage The dust storm occurred at the start of India's monsoon season. In the days prior, region meteorologists had ...
