This is a list of diplomatic missions of Kiribati. Kiribati opened its first diplomatic mission in 2002. The choice of Suva reflected the large number of Kiribati residents in the Fijian Islands working and studying, and Suva's prominence as a regional hub for Pacific diplomacy. In addition Sydney, Auckland, Honolulu, Seoul, Hamburg and London have I-Kiribati Honorary Consulates. Kiribati opened an embassy in Taipei and a permanent mission to the United Nations in New York City in 2013. However, in 2019, President Taneti Maamau decided to recognise the People’s Republic of China and as a result withdrew recognition for the Republic of China ( Taiwan) thus closing the Embassy of Kiribati in Taipei. Foreign Relations Of Kiribati
Kiribati is a full member of the Commonwealth, the IMF and the World Bank, and became a full member of the United Nations in 1999. Kiribati hosted the Thirty-First Pacific Islands Forum in October 2000. Kiribati has Least Developed Country Status and its interests rarely extend beyond the region. Through accession to the Lomé Convention, then Cotonou Agreement, Kiribati is also a member of the African Caribbean and Pacific Group. Kiribati maintains good relations with most countries and has particularly close ties to Pacific neighbours Japan, Australia, South Korea and New Zealand. Kiribati briefly suspended its relations with France in 1995 over that country's decision to renew nuclear testing in the South Pacific. Taneti Maamau (modern spelling: Taaneti Mwamwau, born 16 September 1960) is an I-Kiribati politician who has served as the 5th President of Kiribati since 11 March 2016. Political career A member of Tobwaan Kiribati Party, he began his career in public service as a Planning Officer with the Ministry of Finance before becoming Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives. In 2002, Maamau resigned from public service to join politics and won in 2007 one of the two seats for his constituency home island Onotoa. In 2011 and in 2015, he was re-elected a member of the Maneaba ni Maungatabu (parliament).
