This article provides the list of marjas, ''Maraji'' (plural of ''Marja'', the supreme legal authority or the source of emulation), followed by Twelver (also known as ''Imamiyyah'') Shia Muslims around the world. The concept of a ''Marja-i Taqlid'' (lit. source of emulation) is central to Usuli Shi'a Islam. ''Marja-i Taqlids'' provide religious interpretations on matters of law and rituals. Ideally, the most just and knowledgeable specialist in the field of the Islamic law should become recognized throughout the Muslim world as the ''Marja-i Taqlid''. Marjas
Marji ( ar, مرجع, transliteration: ''marjiʿ''; plural: ''marājiʿ''), literally meaning "source to follow" or "religious reference", is a title given to the highest level of Twelver Shia authority, a Grand Ayatollah with the authority given by a hawzah to make legal decisions within the confines of Islamic law for followers and lower-ranking clerics. The highest ranking ''marjiʿ'' is known as the ''marja al-mutlaq'' or ''marja al-taqlid al-mutlaq''. Sources differ as to when the institution of the marja˓ emerged, with Murtadha al-Ansari (d. 1864) and Muhammad ibn Ya'qub al-Kulayni (d. 940 or 941 CE) both being called the first marja'. Title Currently, maraji' are accorded the title ''Grand Ayatollah'' ( ar, آية الله العظمی ''ʾĀyatullāh al-ʿUẓmā''). Pahlavi Iran
The Imperial State of Iran ( fa, کشور شاهنشاهی ایران, ), also known as the Imperial State of Persia, was the official name of the Iranian state under the rule of the Pahlavi dynasty. It was formed in 1925 and lasted until 1979, when the Pahlavis were overthrown as a result of the Islamic Revolution, which abolished Iran's continuous monarchy and established the present-day Islamic Republic of Iran. The Pahlavi dynasty was founded in 1925 by Reza Shah, a former brigadier-general of the Persian Cossack Brigade. His reign lasted until 1941, when he was forced to abdicate by the Allies of World War II following the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran. Tabriz ( fa, تبریز ; ) is a city in northwestern Iran, serving as the capital of East Azerbaijan Province. It is the List of largest cities of Iran, sixth-most-populous city in Iran. Ja‘far Sobhani
Grand Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani ( fa, جعفر سبحانی) (born 9 April 1929 in Tabriz) is an Iranian Twelver Shia marja, influential theologian and writer. Sobhani was a former member of the Society of Seminary Teachers of Qom and founder of Imam Sadiq Institute in Qom. Education Ja'far Sobhani learned Arabic literature, Principles of Islamic jurisprudence in the Islamic Seminary. In 1946, he went to Islamic Seminary in Qom. In the Islamic Seminary, he took part in famous teachers' classes of Fiqh, Usool, Tafsir, and philosophy. Sobhani's important teachers were Seyyed Hossein Borujerdi, Khomeini, and Mirza Sayyed Mohammad Tabatabai near 15 years. Ayatollah Rahmati Sirjani
Ayatollah ( ; fa, آیتالله, āyatollāh) is an honorific title for high-ranking Twelver Shia clergy in Iran and Iraq that came into widespread usage in the 20th century. Etymology The title is originally derived from Arabic word pre-modified with the definite article and post-modified with the word ''Allah'', making ( ar, آية الله). The combination has been translated to English as 'Sign of God', 'Divine Sign' or 'Reflection of God'. It is a frequently-used term in Quran, but its usage in this context is presumably a particular reference to the verse "We shall show them Our signs on the horizons and in their own selves", while it has been also used to refer to The Twelve Imams by Shias. Rudsar ( fa, رودسر, also known as, Roodsar, Rūdsar and Rūd-i-Sar) is a city and capital of Rudsar County, Gilan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 33,321, in 9,741 families. Grand Ayatollah Abbas Mahfouzi ( ar, آيتالله العظمى عباس محفوظى; born 1928) is an Iranian Twelver Shia Marja. He has studied in seminars of Qom, Iran under Ruhollah Khomeini, Grand Ayatollah Houssein Borujerdi and Mirza Hashem Amoli. Biography Grand Ayatollah Abbas Mahfouzi was born in Rudsar, Iran. He started the education of Quran in his childhood. For higher education he went to Rudsar Seminary. Later he travelled to Qom and studied in Seminars of Qom under Imam Khomeni, Houssein Borujerdi, Mirza Hashem Amoli, Mohammad Reza Golpaygani and Houssein Ali Montezari. He was a firm supporter of Khomeni and he supported Khomeini during 1979 Iranian Revolution. Mousa Shubairi Zanjani
Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Mousa Shubairi Zanjani ( fa, موسی شبیری زنجانی, ar, موسی الشبيري الزنجاني, born March 2, 1928) is an Iranian Twelver Shia Marja'. Biography He was born in Qom to Sayyid Ahmed Shubairi Zanjani. He has studied in the Qom Seminary under Sayyid Hossein Borujerdi and Mohaqeq Damad, as well as in the Hawza Najaf, Najaf Seminary under Sayyid Abu al-Qasim al-Khoei, Sayyid Muhsin al-Hakim, and Sayyid Abd al-Hadi al-Shirazi, Abd al-Hadi Shirazi. He currently resides and teaches in the seminary of Qom. He is a leading expert on the discipline of Ilm ar-Rijal, which seeks to authentically and efficiently pass judgment on the reliability of narrators of Hadith. He leads the prayers in the Fatima Masumeh Shrine. His students include: Sayyid Muhammad-Kadhim al-Tabatabaei, Sayyid Abd al-Hadi al-Mas'udi, and Sayyid Adil al-Alawi.
