Golden West Financial was the second-largest savings and loan association in the United States, operating branches under the name of World Savings Bank. History The business was founded in 1929 as Golden West Savings and Loan Association, a small savings and loan in Oakland, California. Golden West Financial's subsidiary, World Savings, was established in Madera, California, in 1912. Golden West Financial Golden West Savings and Loan Association was purchased in 1963 for $4 million by Herbert Sandler and Marion Sandler, through their newly created corporation, Golden West Financial. Some of the capital for the acquisition came from bank loans, with the balance coming from Marion's family money. The Glad Products Company is an American company specializing in trash bags and plastic food storage containers. History The Glad brand originated in the United States in 1963 when Union Carbide owner and CEO, David Darroch, launched Glad Wrap, a polyethylene film used as a food wrap. Douglas G. Taylor was transferred that same year from the Union Carbide facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to spearhead the Glad Wrap project. Taylor headed sales and marketing for Glad products until he was retired from Union Carbide in 1985 after putting together the sale of Union Carbide's Home and Automotive Products division to First Brands Corporation. At the time of the sale, Taylor was Senior Vice President of the Home and Automotive Products division as well as the head of STP brands. He died in Hilton Head, South Carolina on August 13, 1996. Fentons Creamery is a historic ice cream parlor and restaurant located on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, California, United States. Fentons is the state’s longest continually operating creamery, with a small herd of dairy cows in West Marin. History Eldridge Seth Fenton opened Fentons Creamery in 1894 on the corner of 41st and Howe streets. The business moved to its present location in 1961, a few blocks away. In 1894, Eldridge Seth’s grandson, Melvin Fenton, was responsible for creating Rocky Road, as well as Swiss Milk Chocolate and Toasted Almond. Fentons was then destroyed by an arson fire in 2001. The arsonists claimed the owner of Fentons encouraged them to start the fire. Over $2 million was spent to rebuild it with a grill, more tables, and an expanded menu. Fageol Motors was a United States manufacturer of buses, trucks and farm tractors. History The company was founded in 1916, in Oakland, California, by Rollie, William, Frank and Claude Fageol, to manufacture motor trucks, farm tractors and automobiles. It was located next to Oakland Assembly, then a Chevrolet factory originally built in 1917 by William Durant, which later became part of General Motors. Fageol produced two luxury automobiles, but production was halted when the supply of Hall-Scott overhead camshaft engine, SOHC six-cylinder engines was diverted to build airplanes for the war in World War I.
