Borama
Borama ( so, Boorama, ar, بورما) is the Second capital city of Somaliland and the largest city of the northwestern Awdal region of Somaliland The commercial seat of the province, it is situated near the border with Ethiopia. During the Middle Ages, Borama was ruled by the Adal Sultanate. It later formed a part of the British Somaliland protectorate in the first half of the 20th century. According to the UNDP in 2014, the city had a population of around 398,609 making it one of the largest cities inside Somaliland. It has been a leading example in community organizing, having been the first area in Somaliland to adopt a self-help scheme in the wake of the civil war. Erigavo
Erigavo ( so, Ceerigaabo, ), also spelled as Erigabo, is the capital and largest city of the Sanaag region of Somaliland. History The Erigavo settlement is several centuries old. The surrounding area was supposedly built by the Madigan Dir. Modern Erigavo was founded by the Musa Ismail sub-clan of the Habr Yunis as a home well for passing nomads and caravans. El Afweyne
El Afweyn ( so, Ceelafweyn, ) is a town in the Sanaag region of Somaliland. El Afweyn is a major historical town in western Sanaag region and sits at the major road connecting the cities of Burao and Erigavo. By road, the town is approximately 283 km east of Burao and 88 km southwest of Erigavo. The town is also the administrative seat of the El Afweyn District. History Isaaq genocide During the Isaaq genocide El Afweyn and its surrounding territory saw over 300 persons be killed in October 1988 in revenge for the death of an army officer who was killed by a landmine laid by the rebel Somali National Movement (or the SNM for short). Dilla is a town located in the western Awdal region of Somaliland. Dhummay
Dhummay is a town in the Sool region of Somaliland/Somalia. It is 35 miles south of Las Anod, the regional capital of Sool. Although there have been clan conflicts for a long time, they have distanced themselves from both Somaliland and Puntland, and in 2018 they held a peace agreement with the help of Ethiopia after rejecting interference from Somaliland/Puntland governments. Since then, relations with Somaliland have continued, including visits by key officials of the Somaliland government. Demographics The town is inhabited by the Dhulbahante clan, with the Bahrarsame of the Farah Garad and the Abdi Garad being well represented. Recent History In 2017, it was the centre of raging conflict between two sub-clans whom both inhabit the city. Dhahar
Dhahar is a town in the eastern Sanaag region, and the capital of the Dhahar District. Puntland is in effective control, but Somaliland also has territorial claims. Overview The town is disputed between Somaliland and Puntland, who has significant influence in the town. In November 2009, Puntland and Somaliland forces clashed near Dhahar. In 2016 an incident occurred between the two entities in Boodda-Cad, a remote settlement 30km west of Dhahar. According to Somaliland MP, Baar Said, the skirmishes took place away from Dhahar. A Somaliland Armed Forces base is present in the town where the 93rd division is positioned. Dararweyne
Dararweyne is a town in south-central Sanaag in Somaliland. Dararweyne is a town of the Habar Yoonis clan, and two kilometers east of it is Kulaal, a town of the Dhulbahante clan. Do not confuse this town with the place where has a police & military academy east of Hargaysa (Coordinates: 9°42′N 44°23′E). Recent history In the early 1990s, the SNM promoted peace among all clans within former British Somaliland, but some SNM militias attacked and killed some Dhulbahante citizens in Dararweyne, Hudun, and Sanirgood. This caused Dhulbahante to remain dissatisfied January 2-February 5, 1993, in Dararweyne, between the Habar Yoonis clan and the Dhulbahante clan, a cessation of hostilities and confirmation by the Habar Yoonis of their agreement at the Erigavo conference.
