List Of Captive Orcas
Orcas, or killer whales, are large predatory cetaceans that were first captured live and displayed in exhibitions in the 1960s. They soon became popular attractions at public aquariums and aquatic theme parks due to their intelligence, trainability, striking appearance, playfulness in captivity and sheer size. As of February 2019, captive orcas reside at facilities in North and South America, Europe and Asia. The first North Eastern Pacific orca, Wanda, was captured in November 1961 by a collecting crew from Marineland of the Pacific, and over the next 15 years, around 60 to 70 orcas were taken from Pacific waters for this purpose. When the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, US Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 effectively stopped the capture of Pacific orcas, captures were made in Icelandic waters. Kamogawa Sea World is a large scale comprehensive marine leisure center/museum equivalent facility located between the Tojo coast and the national highway No. 128 in Kamogawa city, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. It is not affiliated with SeaWorld in any way and is operated by Granvista Hotels & Resorts Co., Ltd. it is a public aquarium and is also a member of Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA). Mundo Marino () is the largest aquarium in Argentina. It is located in San Clemente del Tuyú, Argentina. History Juan David Méndez sold his properties in Buenos Aires in the 1960s, and moved to San Clemente del Tuyú. He visited the United States in 1962, and was impressed by the quality of their oceanariums. Back in San Clemente, he bought 18 hectares of land, to work with the sick animals that got stranded in the beaches. Those animals were healed, and then returned to the sea when regained their full health. The aquarium was built next to a crab land, at the San Clemente stream. Mundo Marino had its first dolphin in 1977, and was first open for the public in the 1977/78 summer season. Marineland Of Antibes
The Marineland of Antibes was a theme park founded in 1970 by Count Roland de La Poype in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes), in the French Riviera. It included a marine zoological park with dolphinarium, a water park (''Aquasplash''), a children's play park (''Kid's Island''), mini golf (''Adventure Golf'') and a hotel (''Marineland Resort''). It was property of the Spanish multinational company Parques Reunidos. It was one of the four French dolphinariums and one of the two European dolphinariums presenting orcas. With over 850,000 visitors in 2018, it was the most visited site in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. SeaWorld Orlando is an animal theme park located in Orlando, Florida. Although separately gated, it is often promoted with neighboring parks Discovery Cove and Aquatica as well as Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, all of which are owned and operated by United Parks & Resorts. Katina (born ) is a female orca who lives at SeaWorld Orlando in Orlando, Florida, Florida. She was captured off Iceland at approximately three years of age on 26 October 1978.
