Brewery
A brewery or brewing company is a business that makes and sells beer. The place at which beer is commercially made is either called a brewery or a beerhouse, where distinct sets of brewing equipment are called plant. The commercial brewing of beer has taken place since at least 2500 BC; in ancient Mesopotamia, brewers derived social sanction and divine protection from the goddess Ninkasi. DC Brau Brewing
DC Brau Brewing is an American brewery based in Washington, D.C., founded in 2009. It is the first brewery to operate inside the District of Columbia since 1956, when the Heurich Brewery closed. The brewery was founded by Brandon Skall, its business manager, and Jeff Hancock, its brewmaster. Hancock has brewed at Grizzly Peak Brewing and Arbor Brewing Company, both in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and at Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick, Maryland. DC Brau's inaugural beer was The Public, an American pale ale style beer. The brewery has also released an India Pale Ale style called The Corruption, a Belgian-style pale ale called The Citizen, and a pilsner called Brau Pils, as well as other limited releases. All of the brewery's waste is delivered to a family-owned farm in Haymarket, Virginia, where it is converted into animal feed and composting material. The ''Washington City Paper'' is a U.S. alternative weekly newspaper serving the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The ''City Paper'' is distributed on Thursdays; its average circulation in 2006 was 85,588. The paper's editorial mix is focused on local news and arts. Its 2018 circulation figure was 47,000. History The ''Washington City Paper'' was started in 1981 by Russ Smith and Alan Hirsch, the owners of the ''Baltimore City Paper''. For its first year it was called ''1981''. Christian Heurich Brewing Company
The Christian Heurich Brewing Company was a Washington, D.C., brewery founded in 1872 and incorporated by Christian Heurich in 1890. First located near Dupont Circle on 20th Street NW, it expanded to a much larger site in Foggy Bottom in 1895 after a major fire. The new brewery was located along the Potomac River at 26th Street and D Street NW, where the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts now stands. The Heurich brewery was the largest in Washington's history, capable of producing 500,000 barrels of beer a year and 250 tons of ice daily. The Christian Heurich Brewing Co. closed in 1956, "because of a decline in sales and because of the knowledge that the government would seek to acquire the site of the brewery for the approaches to the new Theodore Roosevelt Bridge." Abner-Drury Brewery
The Abner-Drury Brewery, operating from 1898 to 1938, was a brewery in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The brewery went into bankruptcy on July 31, 1935, and subsequently reorganized as Washington Brewery, Inc. It went out of business permanently in August 1938. Early years The business began when Edward F. Abner purchased the Albert Brewery in the late 1800s. In 1897, Peter A. Drury became E. F. Abner's partner. Abner, born 1864, was originally from Cologne and had moved to Washington in 1885; Drury, born 1865, was from Ireland. Abner-Drury was located on 25th Street in a block extending from F to G Street NW, in Washington's Foggy Bottom neighborhood. It employed many of Foggy Bottom's German residents. National Capital Brewing Company
The National Capital Brewing Company was founded in 1890 by Albert Carry and Robert Portner, two successful Washington, D.C., area brewers. The brewery could produce 100,000 barrels of beer a year and was considered state-of-the-art for the time. It replaced a previous brewery which operated on the site since at least 1877. The Schnell Brewery (1864–1872) was a brewery in Washington, D.C. The brewery, owned by George Schnell, was located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood on 20th Street between M and N Streets, Northwest. It was purchased by Christian Heurich and Paul Rutter in 1872 and served as the first location of the Christian Heurich Brewing Company. Flying Dog Brewery is a craft brewery located in Frederick, Maryland. It was founded in 1990 by George Stranahan and is the largest brewery in Maryland. As of 2017, Flying Dog is the 28th largest craft brewery in the United States. Heavy Seas Beer is brewed by Clipper City Brewing Company, in Baltimore, Maryland. The brewery was established by Hugh Sisson in 1995. Previously, Sisson operated Maryland's first brewpub, Sisson's. In 2010, the brewery rebranded. While the name of the company remains Clipper City Brewing Company, all of its beer falls under the Heavy Seas brand. Heavy Seas hosts tours on most weekends.
