Flying Dog Brewery is a craft brewery located in Frederick, Maryland. It was founded in 1990 by George Stranahan and is the largest brewery in Maryland. As of 2017, Flying Dog is the 28th largest craft brewery in the United States. History A physicist with degrees from the California Institute of Technology and the Carnegie Institute of Technology who had previously co-founded the Aspen Center for Physics in 1962, George Stranahan left an associate professorship at Michigan State University in 1972 to assume ownership of the Flying Dog Ranch in Woody Creek, Colorado. George Stranahan
George Secor Stranahan (November 5, 1931, in Toledo – May 20, 2021, in Denver) was an American physicist and entrepreneur, best remembered for founding the Flying Dog Brewery, Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey, and the Aspen Center for Physics. His family owned the Champion Spark Plug Company, and his inheritance was used to found these ventures. He founded the Woody Creek Tavern, which was the favorite watering hole of Hunter S. Thompson, who was also Stranahan's best friend. Frederick Brewing Company
Frederick Brewing Company (at one point also known as Wild Goose Brewery) was a brewery at the Wedgewood Business Park in Frederick, Maryland, United States. It was founded sometime between 1992 and 1993 by Marjorie McGinnis, Kevin Brannon, Steve Nordahl, and Steven Tluszcz and had its grand opening on 12 February 1997. The company was taken over by Snyder International Brewing Group in 1999 and merged with Snyder International Brewing Group in 2001. In early 2002 or 2003 the company was placed into receivership and in 2006 was purchased by Flying Dog Brewery and renamed Wild Goose Brewery. At some point the brewery stopped being known as Wild Goose Brewery and just became Flying Dog Brewery. The brewery was generally considered to be state of the art. Silent Old Mtns (Silent Old Mountains) is an American indie rock band, formed in Frederick, Maryland, in 2011 by singer songwriter Andrew Bromhal. They have released two full-length albums and are most noted for their energetic and theatrical live shows. They are also well known for their promotion of the indie music scene and DIY ethic: at one point touring the country in a repurposed school bus and averaging over 100 live performances per year despite having no corporate backing. Ralph Idris Steadman (born 15 May 1936) is a British illustrator best known for his collaboration and friendship with the American writer Hunter S. Thompson. Steadman is renowned for his political and social caricatures, cartoons and picture books. Early life Steadman was born in Wallasey, Cheshire From a lower middle class background, his father was a commercial traveller and his mother was a shop assistant at T J Hughes in Liverpool.
