This is the complete list of Basilicas in India. Basilica is a title given to some Catholic churches. By canon law no Catholic church can be honoured with the title of basilica unless by apostolic grant or from immemorial custom. The title is bestowed upon large churches that are important as places of pilgrimage or for a specific devotion such as to a saint. Basilicas in this canonical sense are divided into major ("greater") and minor basilicas. Today only four, all in Rome, are classified as major basilicas: the major basilicas of St John Lateran, St Peter, St Paul outside the Walls, and St Mary Major. The other canonical basilicas, including all the basilicas in India are minor basilicas. Velankanni Town
Velankanni (''Vēḷāṅkaṇṇi''), is a Special Grade Panchayat Town in Nagapattinam district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It lies on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, 350 km south of Chennai (Madras), 12 km south of Nagapattinam, and 33 km southeast of Thiruvarur. Once a port that traded with Rome and Greece, the tiny commercial center gradually lost its importance to the larger city of Nagapattinam. The canal built to link this town with Vedaranyam still lies to the west. The Vellayar, a minor branch of the Cauvery River, runs south of the town and discharges into the sea. Basilica of Our Lady of Graces is a Roman Catholic Church in Sardhana, 19 km north-west of Meerut, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Overview Basilica of Our Lady of Graces, also known as ''Churches among the Churches'', is dedicated to Virgin Mary. The Church was built by Begum Samru, a Muslim Nautch girl of 14 who married a European mercenary soldier Walter Reinhardt Sombre. Samru converted to Roman Catholicism in 1781 and adopted the name Joanna Nobilis. She is regarded as the only Catholic ruler in India, and ruled the Principality of Sardhana in 18th and 19th century. Officially the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount Bandra, colloquially known as Mount Bandra and Mount St Mary Church, is a basilica of the Catholic Church in India located at Bandra in Bombay (Mumbai).
