Ashern, Manitoba
AshernCanada 2016 Censuspopulation 565) is an unincorporated community recognized as a local urban district located in the Municipality of West Interlake in Manitoba's Interlake Region. The RM of Siglunes was incorporated in 1917. Ashern was named after A. S. Hern, a timekeeper of the firm that constructed the railway that served the Western Interlake. Today the municipality supports the agriculture (mostly beef in addition to a few private pork and chicken farms), fishing, mineral extraction, recreation and tourism industries. The community of Ashern is the largest community in the RM and is a regional service centre to a trading area of approximately 8,000 people. Arborg, Manitoba
Arborg is a town located 103 kilometres north of Winnipeg, at the junction of Manitoba Highways 7 and 68, in the Interlake Region of Manitoba, Canada. The town is surrounded by the Municipality of Bifrost - Riverton and has a population of 1,222 as of the Canada 2016 Census. History The picturesque setting along the Icelandic River was first settled in the late 19th century. Its first postal address was Ardal (Icelandic ''Árdalur'', meaning "River Valley"), but in 1910 when the Canadian Pacific Railway reached the settlement, the name was changed to Arborg (''Árborg'', meaning "River Town"). The original railway station from 1910 still stands and is today recognized as a heritage site. The building has been converted into a public library. Altona, Manitoba
Altona is a town in southern Manitoba, Canada, about 100 km south-west of Winnipeg and 158 km north of Grand Forks, North Dakota. The population at the 2011 Census was 4,123 residents. Old Altona was founded in 1880 by Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonites from the Russian Empire. It is surrounded by the Municipality of Rhineland. Much of the surrounding area is devoted to farming and agriculture-based business. History Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonites from Russia began settling in Manitoba from 1874 through 1880 after signing a Privilegium with the Canadian government. The settlers initially were located in the Mennonite Reserve (largely now the Rural Municipality of Hanover).
