The World Rally Championship (WRC) is a rallying series organised by the FIA, culminating with a champion driver and manufacturer. The driver's world championship and manufacturer's world championship are separate championships, but based on the same point system. The series currently consists of 13 three-day events driven on surfaces ranging from gravel and tarmac to snow and ice. Each rally is split into 10–25 special stages which are run against the clock on closed roads. Sébastien Loeb holds the record for the most event victories, having won 80 times. Sébastien Ogier is second with 57 wins and Marcus Grönholm is third with 30 wins. Sébastien Loeb holds the distinction of having the longest time between his first win and his last. Rallying
Rally is a wide-ranging form of motorsport with various competitive motoring elements such as speed tests (often called ''rally racing),'' navigation tests, or the ability to reach waypoints or a destination at a prescribed time or average speed. Rallies may be short in the form of trials at a single venue, or several thousand miles long in an extreme endurance rally. Depending on the format, rallies may be organised on private or public roads, open or closed to traffic, or off-road in the form of cross country or rally-raid. Competitors can use production vehicles which must be road-legal if being used on open roads or specially built competition vehicles suited to crossing specific terrain. Rallying is typically distinguished from other forms of motorsport by not running directly against other competitors over laps of a circuit, but instead in a point-to-point format in which participants leave at regular intervals from one or more start points. 2009 Rally Argentina
The 2009 Rally Argentina was the 29th running of the Rally Argentina and the fifth round of the 2009 World Rally Championship season. The rally consisted of 23 special stages and was run on 23–26 April. It was won by Citroën's Sébastien Loeb for the fifth consecutive year. His teammate Dani Sordo finished second. Ford's Mikko Hirvonen, who was in second place only six seconds behind Loeb after stage 14, retired due to an engine problem. This gave Loeb a 20-point lead in the drivers' championship. Hirvonen's teammate Jari-Matti Latvala, under pressure to get a good result after his recent crashes, dropped out of contention for the win after a puncture on Friday. 1993 Rally New Zealand
The Rally New Zealand is an annual rally race in New Zealand. It was first included as a round of the World Rally Championship in 1977. The race is famous for its fast flowing gravel roads which carry the competitors through forests and alongside the New Zealand coastline. It was first held in Taupo in 1969, and was subsequently staged in Canterbury, before moving back to the North Island in 1971. Auckland has hosted the majority of Rally New Zealand events. From 2006 to 2008 the event was based in Hamilton, with the service park, parc ferme and the super special stage all being located at the Mystery Creek Events Centre. In 2010 it returned to Auckland. The WRC teams voted Propecia Rally New Zealand "Rally of the Year" in 2001. The 2007 Rally New Zealand ended with the closest-ever finish in the history of the World Rally Championship. The 2004 Rally Argentina (formally the 24th CTI Movil Rally Argentina) was the eighth round of the 2004 World Rally Championship. The race was held over four days between 15 and 18 July 2004, and was based in Villa Carlos Paz, Argentina. 2007 Rally New Zealand
The 2007 Rally New Zealand (''37th Propecia Rally New Zealand''), 11th round of 2007 World Rally Championship, was run on 31 August to 2 September. After a tight battle for three days, Marcus Grönholm beat Sébastien Loeb for the win by 0.3 seconds, making it the second-closest finish in WRC history (after 2011 Jordan Rally's 0.2s). This was the closest finish in the history of the World Rally Championship. The 2010 Rally de Portugal was the 44th Rally de Portugal and the sixth round of the 2010 World Rally Championship season. The rally took place over May 27–30, and was based in Faro, the capital city of the Algarve region. The rally was also the second round of the Junior World Rally Championship and the fifth round of the Super 2000 World Rally Championship. After losing the lead on the final stage in New Zealand, Citroën Junior Team driver Sébastien Ogier took his first WRC victory by 7.9 seconds ahead of championship leader Sébastien Loeb. Third place went to Loeb's team-mate Dani Sordo, with Mikko Hirvonen edging out Petter Solberg for fourth place on the final run through the super-special stage at the Estádio Algarve. Sébastien Loeb is a French rally driver and a nine-time champion of the World Rally Championship. With 80 rally wins in the World Rally Championship, Loeb is the most successful rally driver in the history of the championship, alongside his co-driver Daniel Elena. Competing in his native France in the early parts of his career, Loeb later contested the World Rally Championship with the French Federation of Automobile Sport, between 1999 and 2000. For 2001, Loeb joined Citroën and was a Junior World Rally Champion with the team. During 2002, Loeb won his first event in the World Rally Championship, winning the 2002 Rallye Deutschland ahead of the then-defending World Champion Richard Burns.
