United States Post Office Department
The United States Post Office Department (USPOD; also known as the Post Office or U.S. Mail) was the predecessor of the United States Postal Service, in the form of a Cabinet department, officially from 1872 to 1971. It was headed by the postmaster general. The Postal Service Act, signed by U.S. president George Washington on February 20, 1792, established the department. Postmaster General John McLean, in office from 1823 to 1829, was the first to call it the Post Office ''Department'' rather than just the "Post Office." The organization received a boost in prestige when President Andrew Jackson invited his postmaster general, William T. Barry, to sit as a member of the Cabinet in 1829. United States Post Office And Courthouse–Prescott Main
The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse–Prescott Main, in Prescott, Arizona, was built in 1931. It was or is also known as Prescott Main Post Office and Courthouse and Prescott Main Post Office. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It is a Beaux Arts architecture building and is NRHP-listed for its architecture. The Post Office steps are made of porphyritic granite from Minnesota, containing large 1-inch phenocrysts of orthoclase feldspar. The original plans called for using local Prescott Granodiorite, as at the nearby Courthouse. The post office lobby is clad in fine veined Indiana marble. United States Post Office (Phoenix, Arizona)
The U.S. Post Office at 522 North Central Avenue at 1st Avenue and West Fillmore Street in Phoenix, Arizona, also known as the Federal Building-U.S. Post Office, is a building of the United States federal government that was built in 1932-1936 and designed by Lescher and Mahoney in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It is currently part of Arizona State University's Downtown Phoenix Campus, where it houses student organizations, counseling services, administrative offices and the ASU Police Department. A USPS location is situated on the first floor of the old post office. Significance The Federal Building-U.S. Post Office in Phoenix, Arizona is significant on a local level in two areas: architecture and politics/government. American Flag, Arizona
American Flag is a ghost town in Pinal County, Arizona, five miles southeast of Oracle. The town was established in the late 1870s but shortly after 1890, the town had become abandoned. History American Flag was founded by prospector Isaac Lorraine as the American Flag mine and mining camp in the late 1870s. In 1881 the town was sold to the Richardson Mining Company of New York. The town was small and had a population of about forty on average. Little is known about the mining camp at this time. Eventually Isaac Lorraine would turn his attention to cattle, where he later built the American Flag Ranch. By 1884, the population was only fifteen so the post office closed a few years later and the town was left unoccupied. The post office was moved to the American Flag Ranch headquarters in 1880. United States Post Office (Kingman, Arizona)
The U. S. Post Office is a historic building located in Kingman, Arizona. The post office was built in 1935. The design of the post office is Period Revival with Italian influence. Louis A. Simon was the Supervisor Architect and Neal A. Melick was the Supervisor Engineer. The first post office building for Kingman, the earlier post offices were located in stores. Today the post office is owned by the City of Kingman and is used for office space in the downtown area. It is across the street from the Little Red School and around the corner of the street of the old Elks Lodge. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Sitka United States Post Office And Court House
The Sitka U.S. Post Office and Court House, also known as the Sitka Post Office and now serving as Sitka City Hall, is a Moderne style building located at 100 Lincoln Street in the center of Sitka, Alaska. One of eight Federal buildings constructed in the Alaska Territory in the 1930s, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. It is a poured-concrete structure that is rectangular in shape, set on a raised basement. The reduced-width second level gives the building the appearance of having wings on either side. The building was historically accessed through an entry on the first floor, about 10 feet above street level, and accessed via symmetrically placed stairways. Its main entrance has since been relocated to the basement level. Cordova Post Office And Courthouse
The Cordova Post Office and Courthouse is a historic government building at 612 2nd Street in Cordova, Alaska. It is an L-shaped building, its structure determined in part by the site, which is set into a hill. At the front it is three stories in height and five bays wide, with its main entrance in the leftmost bay, sheltered by a modern solid canopy. The exterior is finished in concrete. The interior originally had the post office on the first floor, a courtroom and judge's chambers on the second floor, and other court offices and a law library on the third floor. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, at which time it was reported to be the oldest post office building in Alaska still in use as a post office. and Cordova's main post office is now at 502 Railroad Avenue, and its court is now located at 500 Water Street.
