Cordova Post Office And Courthouse
The Cordova Post Office and Courthouse is a historic government building at 612 2nd Street in Cordova, Alaska. It is an L-shaped building, its structure determined in part by the site, which is set into a hill. At the front it is three stories in height and five bays wide, with its main entrance in the leftmost bay, sheltered by a modern solid canopy. The exterior is finished in concrete. The interior originally had the post office on the first floor, a courtroom and judge's chambers on the second floor, and other court offices and a law library on the third floor. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, at which time it was reported to be the oldest post office building in Alaska still in use as a post office. and Cordova's main post office is now at 502 Railroad Avenue, and its court is now located at 500 Water Street. Cordova, Alaska
Cordova ( ) is a city in Chugach Census Area, Alaska, United States. It lies near the mouth of the Copper River, at the head of Orca Inlet on the east side of Prince William Sound. The population was 2,609 at the 2020 census, up from 2,239 in 2010. Cordova was named ''Puerto Córdoba'' (after Córdoba, Spain) by Spanish explorer Salvador Fidalgo in 1790. No roads connect Cordova to other Alaskan communities, so a plane or ferry is required to travel there. In the Exxon Valdez oil spill of March 1989, an oil tanker ran aground northwest of Cordova, heavily damaging ecology and fishing. It was cleaned up shortly after, but there are lingering effects, such as a lowered population of some birds. Chugach National Forest
The Chugach National Forest is a United States National Forest in south central Alaska. Covering portions of Prince William Sound, the Kenai Peninsula and the Copper River Delta, it was formed in 1907 from part of a larger forest reserve. The Chugach includes extensive shorelines, glaciers, forests and rivers, much of which is untouched by roads or trails. It hosts numerous bird, mammal and marine species, including extensive shorebird habitat and a bald eagle population larger than the contiguous 48 states combined.
