List Of Superfund Sites In Maine
This is a list of Superfund sites in Maine designated under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) environmental law. The CERCLA federal law of 1980 authorized the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to create a list of Pollution, polluted locations requiring a long-term response to clean up hazardous material contaminations.P.L. 96-510, (), December 11, 1980. These locations are known as Superfund sites, and are placed on the National Priorities List (NPL). The NPL guides the EPA in "determining which sites warrant further investigation" for environmental remediation. As of November 29, 2010, there were 12 Superfund sites on the National Priorities List in Maine. No additional sites are currently proposed for entry on the list. Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, And Liability Act
Superfund is a United States federal environmental remediation program established by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA). The program is administered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The program is designed to investigate and clean up sites contaminated with hazardous substances. Sites managed under this program are referred to as "Superfund" sites. There are 40,000 federal Superfund sites across the country, and approximately 1,300 of those sites have been listed on the National Priorities List (NPL). Sites on the NPL are considered the most highly contaminated and undergo longer-term remedial investigation and remedial action (cleanups). Eastland Woolen Mill
SS ''Eastland'' was a passenger ship based in Chicago and used for tours. On 24 July 1915, the ship rolled over onto its side while tied to a dock in the Chicago River. In total, 844 passengers and crew were killed in what was the largest loss of life from a single shipwreck on the Great Lakes. After the disaster, ''Eastland'' was salvaged and sold to the United States Navy. After restorations and modifications, ''Eastland'' was designated a gunboat and renamed USS ''Wilmette''. She was used primarily as a training vessel on the Great Lakes, and was scrapped after World War II. Construction The ship was commissioned during 1902 by the Michigan Steamship Company and built by the Jenks Ship Building Company of Port Huron, Michigan.
