''Saw'' is an American horror media franchise created by Australian filmmakers James Wan and Leigh Whannell and distributed by Lions Gate Entertainment and Twisted Pictures. The films take place in a fictional universe that revolves around a serial killer, dubbed The Jigsaw Killer, who captures victims who he believes do not appreciate their life and puts them into traps to test their survival instinct. ''Saw'' is a horror franchise created by Australian film makers James Wan and Leigh Whannell, consisting of nine feature films and additional media. Set in an unnamed city in the United States, the first eight films primarily revolve around the fictional serial killer John "Jigsaw" Kramer, while the ninth movie revolves around a copycat killer while still keeping continuity with the previous films. John Kramer was introduced briefly in ''Saw'' and developed in more detail in ''Saw II'' and the subsequent films. Kevin Greutert
Kevin Greutert (born March 31, 1965) is an American film director, film editor and writer, best known for his work on the ''Saw'' film series, as well as character-based supernatural horrors. He is married to actress Elizabeth Rowin. Career Greutert was the film editor for '' The Strangers'' (2008), '' Room 6'' (2006), and ''Journey to the End of the Night'' (2006). He was also the editor of the ''Saw'' series for the first five films, as well as the eighth, ''Jigsaw''. He made his feature directorial debut with ''Saw VI'', which was released on October 23, 2009. Greutert wrote the original story for and was signed on to direct ''Paranormal Activity 2'', but he was forced off the project and onto ''Saw 3D'' after Twisted Pictures (production company behind the ''Saw'' films) exercised a "contractual clause" in his contract. David Hackl
David Hackl is a Canadian film director and production designer. Life and career Hackl was the production designer and second unit director for ''Saw II'', ''Saw III'', and ''Saw IV''; as well as for ''Repo! The Genetic Opera''. He was in talks to direct ''Saw IV'', but Darren Lynn Bousman returned as the director. Later it was reported that Hackl would direct both ''Saw V'' and ''Saw VII'', but eventually he only directed ''Saw V'', while ''Saw VII'' was directed by Kevin Greutert, the editor of all of the ''Saw'' films to date, who also directed ''Saw VI''. Rotten Tomatoes is an American review-aggregation website for film and television. The company was launched in August 1998 by three undergraduate students at the University of California, Berkeley: Senh Duong, Patrick Y. Lee, and Stephen Wang. Although the name "Rotten Tomatoes" connects to the practice of audiences throwing rotten tomatoes in disapproval of a poor stage performance, the original inspiration comes from a scene featuring tomatoes in the Canadian film ''Léolo'' (1992).
