A locomotive or engine is a rail transport vehicle that provides the Power (physics), motive power for a train. If a locomotive is capable of carrying a payload, it is usually rather referred to as a multiple unit, Motor coach (rail), motor coach, railcar or power car; the use of these self-propelled vehicles is increasingly common for passenger trains, but rare for freight (see CargoSprinter). Traditionally, locomotives pulled trains from the front. Power Cars
In rail transport, the expression power car may refer to either of two distinct types of rail vehicle: *a vehicle that propels, and commonly also controls, a passenger train, multiple unit or tram, often as the lead vehicle; *a vehicle equipped with machinery for supplying heat or electrical power to other parts of a train. The first of these types of vehicle is closely related to the locomotive. What differentiates the locomotive and the first type of power car is their construction or use. A locomotive can be physically separated from its train and does nothing but provide propulsion and control (and heat or electricity for passenger trains). On the other hand, a power car of the first type is frequently an integral part of its train, and if the train uses distributed traction, some of the car's interior space may be used for carrying passengers or cargo. SNCF Class BB 1600
The SNCF Class BB 1600 were a class of 1,500 V DC electric locomotives built for the Pau – Lourdes line of the Chemins de fer du Midi by CEF (Constructions électriques de France). SNCF Class CC 1100
The SNCF Class CC 1100 was a class of 12 centre cab electric shunting locomotives, the first two of which were originally ordered for the PO-Midi. Originally numbered E 1001–E 1012, under the 1950 SNCF renumbering they became CC 1101–CC 1112. They were built by Batignolles-Châtillon and Oerlikon, the first two, E 1001 and E 1002, in 1937 and the remaining ten, E 1003–E 1012, between 1943 and 1948. Completely rebuilt between 1989 and 1995, the last was withdrawn from service in 2005. Description Design considerations At the time of ordering, decommissioned main-line locomotives of Class BB 1320 and Class BB 1420 were used for shunting purposes in marshalling yards. SNCF Class BB 900
The SNCF Class BB 900 was a class of 35 mixed-traffic electric locomotives built between 1936 and 1937 for État. The class was a development of the pre-war Midi Class E4700 and very similar to the later Class BB 300 and Class BB 325. Initial use was on the Paris–Le Mans line. The class was withdrawn in 1987 after 50 years in service. History Context In the early 1930s, the economic crisis hit and the government undertook major works to support employment, known as the Marquet plan. It was in this context that the decision was made to electrify the line from Paris-Montparnasse to Brest, between Paris and Le Mans. SNCF Class BB 325
The SNCF Class BB 325 was a class of 25 electric locomotives built between 1946 and 1948. The class was a development of the pre-war Midi Class E4700 and very similar to the Class BB 300. As delivered they were numbered 0325–0355. Under the 1950 renumbering scheme they became BB 325–BB 355. In 1967 the cab end doors were removed. Between 1977 and 1987, the class was rebuilt as shunters with the top speed reduced to . The class was withdrawn in 1997. SNCF Class BB 300
The SNCF Class BB 300 was a class of 24 electric locomotives built between 1938 and 1939. Originally ordered by the Paris–Orleans/Midi railway as a development of the Midi Class E4700 for fast services from Paris to Bordeaux and Toulouse. As delivered they were numbered E 241–E 264. Under the 1950 renumbering scheme they became BB 301–BB 324. E 258 was destroyed in 1944 so never became BB 318. In 1949, 11 locomotives were leased to Nederlandse Spoorwegen, returning to SNCF in 1951. Between 1977 and 1987, the class was rebuilt as shunters with the top speed reduced to .
