Principal (academia)
The principal is the chief executive and the chief academic officer of a university or college in certain parts of the Commonwealth. In the United States, the principal is the head of school at most pre-university, non-boarding schools. Canada Queen's University, the constituent colleges of the University of Toronto and McGill University in Canada have principals instead of presidents or rectors, as a result of their Scottish origins. In addition Bishop's University, and the Royal Military College of Canada also have principals. England Many colleges of further education in England have a principal in charge (e.g., Cirencester College and West Nottinghamshire College). Henry Boyd (academic)
Henry Boyd (1831 – 4 March 1922) was a British clergyman, academic, and administrator at the University of Oxford. Boyd attained a BA degree from Hertford College, Oxford. He was ordained in 1854 and was perpetual curate at St Mark's, Victoria Docks in Silvertown, London, from 1862 to 1874. He became a Fellow at Hertford College in 1872 and Principal from 1877 to 1922. He was a friend of James Duncan (Sugar refiner, art collector), together they helped to improve the working conditions in London’s East End during the 1870s. He commissioned the architect Sir Thomas Jackson to enlarge and improve the college, including a new hall and chapel, completed in 1907. At Oxford University, Boyd was Vice-Chancellor from 1890 to 1894. He was Master of the Worshipful Company of Drapers (1896–97). He was also a watercolour painter. Henry Boyd died on 4 March 1922. Thomas Fletcher (diplomat)
Thomas Stuart Francis "Tom" Fletcher CMG (born 27 March 1975) is the Principal of Hertford College, Oxford. He was formerly a British diplomat, a writer, and a campaigner. From 2011 to 2015, he was the British Ambassador to Lebanon. He is a Visiting Professor at New York University and author of ''The Naked Diplomat'' (2016) and “''Ten Survival Skills for a World in Flux''” (2022). Early life Fletcher was born in Kent and educated at The Harvey Grammar School and Hertford College, Oxford, where he was awarded first class honours in Modern History. He was Junior Common Room President at Hertford College. William Nicolas Hutton (born 21 May 1950) is a British journalist. As of 2022, he writes a regular column for ''The Observer'', co-chairs the Purposeful Company, and is the president-designate of the Academy of Social Sciences. John Maxwell Landers, (born 1952) is a British historian, anthropologist, and academic, who specialises in historical demography. Walter Bodmer
Sir Walter Fred Bodmer (born 10 January 1936) is a German-born British human geneticist. Early life Bodmer was born in Frankfurt, Germany. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and went on to study the Mathematical Tripos at the University of Cambridge as a student of Clare College, Cambridge. He was awarded his PhD in 1959 from Cambridge for research on population genetics in the house mouse and ''Primula vulgaris'' (primrose) supervised by Ronald Fisher. Christopher Zeeman
Sir Erik Christopher Zeeman FRS (4 February 1925 – 13 February 2016), was a British mathematician, known for his work in geometric topology and singularity theory. Overview Zeeman's main contributions to mathematics were in topology, particularly in knot theory, the piecewise linear category, and dynamical systems. His 1955 thesis at the University of Cambridge described a new theory termed "dihomology", an algebraic structure associated to a topological space, containing both homology and cohomology, introducing what is now known as the Zeeman spectral sequence. This was studied by Clint McCrory in his 1972 Brandeis thesis following a suggestion of Dennis Sullivan that one make "a general study of the Zeeman spectral sequence to see how singularities in a space perturb Poincaré duality". Geoffrey Warnock
Sir Geoffrey James Warnock (16 August 19238 October 1995) was an English philosopher and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. Before his knighthood (in the 1986 New Year Honours), he was commonly known as G. J. Warnock. Life Warnock was born at Neville House, Chapel Allerton, Leeds, West Yorkshire, to James Warnock (1880–1953), OBE, a general practitioner from Northern Ireland who had been a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and Kathleen (née Hall; 1890–1979). The Warnocks later lived at Grade II-listed Pull Croft, Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire (historically Berkshire). Warnock was educated at Winchester College.
